Description The Bixby Bridge in Big Sur, California. This is a B&W from 2 color digital files offset by 1EV (simulating the dynamic range of film). I am drawn to this bridge as a subject since I pass over it several times a week. Such a monumental project, you have to wonder if it could even be built today with all the red tape and inflated construction costs. The clouds were begging me to try another angle of this bridge, this is from a small access road on the north canyon wall.

I was thinking about trying to get down there to shoot that spot too... how was it where you stationed yourself? Many other people there?

up the old coast road just to the north of the bridge, bring someone you really, really trust to hang on to your belt

Tough to live in such a desolate, and ugly part of calif. Do you ever venture down to
hearst castle area and photograph the elephant seas.. My wife and I have spent a couple of
weeks in cambria calif. Its fun country for photography. I spent most of my time on wildlife,
should have spent more time on the coastal area.. You have some stunning shots. Love the fire
in the hole shot.

I tend to stick close to home or go far afield on a trek. As a result 'semi-local' stuff gets missed. I do spend a great deal of time in Big Sur and Ventana (the mountains just to the east of the coast), but to me that's home.

Like I have said, I am not much of a wildlife guy, I like my subjects to hold too still. You have wonderful shots, I could use some pointers, lol, the latest group with the hawk are amazing.

Thanks.. I have two sets of eyes. One set is 400mm, always looking out for critters, but
I carry my 5D along for the senic type shots. Sometimes its easy to overlook one
or the other... I do it all the time.(can't see the forest for the trees as they say..)

When I first looked at this I thought it was a photmanip!!! Thumbnal size it looks like the water level is up to the bridge on the far side

Very cool shot!

This is wonderful in B&W and you managed to miss the utility poles and cable or did you have to edit them out

Pretty cool how something can appear both delicate and sturdy at the same time. I like the contrast in this and the amazing clarity. How long do you usually have to wait before you can get a shot with no vehicles traversing the span?

yes, it is impressive, though I wonder if it isn't a little low on contrast... but then there is always that problem of how we see these pictures, each of us on our own monitor. I think that for me, the supports of the bridge would have been more compelling than the clouds. But still, I like the way it came out.

I think you are right, the bridge could use a bit more dodging. You have a good eye, as always...

A grand bridge indeed. I am fascinated by the way bridges become part of the landscape rather than an addition or imposition.

I feel the colour screaming to be free but it looks so impressive in black and white. Piy you couldn't get down onto the beach under it and shoot up, that would make it all that much more impressive.
