I have this little head-canon about Roy's killer shades:

Eyes are often called "the gateway to the soul". Eyes are often shown in literature to reflect emotion. Roy doesn't want either to show, so he wears sunglasses to cover his eyes. But if he needs a heart-to-heart talk with someone, he takes off his glasses.
