What's the story behind this?
I don't travel much, so the only stories I hear are from my grandpa.

Well, Iktomi is a trixter spirit in Lakota culture. He is said to come many times in the form of a spider. (even though he can come in many different forms)He can cause many problems and I actually came up with this idea when i was having a little trouble with him myself.

you're right. i was trying not to bring too much attention to the whole "heyoka" part of it. (you'll notice i even spelled heyoka different in my user name) iktomi is the form he has usually come to me in, (and it seems he likes to visit me often, way back to when i was bitten by a brown recluce as a kid) he has come to me in other forms too. this poem is actually about that. the picture is a little blurry. i'm still trying to get used to my new camera.
as far as the hair, it doesn't look as drastic in person.

There is amazing detail in this...I love the look on his face, and the texture given to his skin and clothing.
Unfortunately I think you've been the victim of a bad scan or photo because it seems just a bit fuzzy, but you've gotten a lot better with the contrast on this.
My only thing to really critique on this is the highlights on the hair...I think that with the shading of the rest of the peice it may have been too drastic...maybe you could show the strands lightly even through the highlighted area?
Again...only a suggestion...I love this work...and I would dare say I would purchase it if I saw it in a store on on a wood carving!

is Iktomi another name for Nanabozho? He's also a trickster.

i don't know of "nanabozho", but iktomi is a trickter spirit in the lakota culture. although he can come in many forms, he usually comes in the form of a spider. in fact the word for spider in the lakota language is also iktomi.
he can be a nasty guy.

Nanabozho is a trickster spirit in the Anishanabe tribes...and some others, but I have forgotten. When I was little I liked reading about Native American culture. I still do, but I don't get a lot of time to!
