Description Velvet's 3d version. I did the concepts, textures and a few adjustments on the model. She was also adjusted some more for the final in-game version, but not much.

It was a pain in the butt to make the lace on the concept... it was hell doing it for the texture too, but it was still kinda fun.

Hope you like and feel free to ask questions about how these thingies are made, I might post a 3d tutorial at some point starting from concept down to textured model.

Thanks, we used Zbrush for a high res sculpt, Max for the in-game mesh, and photoshop for texturing.

I might make a tutorial at some point, but there's lots of them even here in deviant art also. I recommend searching 3d tutorials here and see what comes up.

This is what I aspire to be able to do by the end of 2012 - take a character from concept to model and maybe further. So you can imagine I'm damn impressed and admiring of the fact that you got the model and its texture almost exactly like the concept art.

Looking at the textures you guys really do make the most of the space when unwrapping! And sorry you had to do the lace again lol, lace is a pain in the ass to draw and get right. :S

Very well detailed, and I imagine if I did my own texturing stuff I could appreciate it better, but to me it just looks like someone skinned her and left the bits closeby.

Ooh. Overlord. been playing that lately.

I notice that the head texture only seems to be half the face... do you mirror the texture to cover the other half?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HecM In reply to Mazinja [2009-06-24 08:59:38 +0000 UTC]

yup, it's a pretty standard way to make the most out of low res textures.

Liamythesh [2008-10-20 20:26:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, apparently a lot of companies want you to have at least one of these in your portfolio. How would I go about making one of my own? I don't know where to get a free program to make and skin a model, or how to actually go about doing it at all... Any answers you might have would help, and by the way, she absolutely rocks.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HecM In reply to Liamythesh [2008-10-22 08:59:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanx for commenting. I might do a 3d character tutorial in the future so stay tunned. As far as free 3d progs you can start by checking out "blender." Should show up if you google it. I use max and maya and there's learning editions for both programs that you can download and use. If you have any other questions let me know.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Liamythesh In reply to HecM [2008-10-26 02:39:52 +0000 UTC]

I didn't think I'd actually have to make the model... I just want to skin one I mean, sure it would be nice to know how to make one of those things, but I really just need to be able to say "there, I skinned one" and have it in my portfolio..

Do you know how to make these in the program, or do you just do the textures?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HecM In reply to Liamythesh [2008-10-30 13:44:51 +0000 UTC]

I thought you meant making the model. Skinning in the industry can mean two things, one would be in the realm of rigging and skinning which would entail setting up the skeleton for movement and setting up the model to move correctly with the skeleton like a "skin." The other one could be skinning as in texturing it I guess. In my experience I've done all these things, not just textures. I've modeled, textured, rigged and skinned models before and even animated some of my own models. Overall it depends on what industry you want to get into for what you'd need in your portfolio. If you want to become a games artist or cg artist then yeah, it's good to have a bit of knowledge and experience in all these fields, if you're into becoming a concept artist or illustrator then it's not really necessary to dive so deep into all these 3d fields and specialties. Hope this answers your questions a bit better.

Liamythesh In reply to HecM [2008-10-30 18:33:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Concept is what I'd prefer, although I guess it's good to keep my options open. Should I be able to learn all of this with a trial edition of 3ds Max?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HecM In reply to Liamythesh [2008-10-30 18:56:43 +0000 UTC]

You can learn the basics with the trial and learning versions of those programs. There's also progs like google sketchup which are easy to pick up 3d programs that can help you for concept art, you can find a video of that here [link] .

In general it's good to know some 3d basics since in some studios you may not only work as concept artist, but also as texture artist and for that you need to know your way around 3d progs. In general it increases and improves your chances to get work and good positions.

How do you get such clean uv maps? I struggle with this, so a tutorial might help. (I use Blender.) Any 3d tutorials you might post would be awesome.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HecM In reply to celestialsunberry [2008-07-25 18:46:11 +0000 UTC]

I use max and in max there's some pretty nice tools for unwrapping and laying out UVs. With the tools from max I use a combination of pelt mapping and relax function. I don't know much of how to do it with blender, but there are other freeware tools out there that can do pretty good UVs quickly also, one I've heard about is wings 3d. I could explain further how to do it with max, but I don't know if that would help for blender. Let me know and I might post some 3d tutorials with the tools I know.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

celestialsunberry In reply to HecM [2008-07-25 18:55:46 +0000 UTC]

For Blender, it's easy to unwrap, but a real pain in the butt for things not to overlap. Most tutorials can be adapted from Max--I've used plenty of them myself. It's always, "Where the heck is that on the map!!??" and it's like hunting for a needle in a haystack. I've used Wings before, but I didn't know it did uvmapping. O_O For people who can use Wings...I'm...amazed at the jobs they do. If you could post a tutorial, I'm sure I would learn a lot. If you can think of any other freebie programs that will help with unwrapping, that'd be great!

Congratulations on this one ...

I expecialy like how the Concept and 3d look very exact ...

Of course the concept is alot better in quality than the 3d ...
But then of course its a low poly ...

I reaaly would like to see "high poly" works of you ... as good and detailed as the concept also .

But you got there some unique skills that alot studios need ...

good luck with ya everything in live..
Keep efforting the most ...

Only that way we reach reaaly greath things in live

Hugs
