Personality

Amiable | Creative | Perceptive | Thoughtful

Chouko is a sincere and excitable soul that enjoys simple things and actions from people. Friends, or people that she finds herself drawn to, are often the main recipients of this behavior. Although she does like to meet new people in general since she is quite the social butterfly. Along with being friendly, she also has a great sense of creativity that allows her to be either innovative with her naginata, with stories, or with her excuses. Such imagination is not thought out recklessly though. She is always careful on trying to understand topics at different angles, whether it is an object, a subject, or an individual. Though sometimes, her imagination and perspective can be completely wrong and lead to confusion or chaos. Chouko is also highly reflective of herself and her general environment. So, while she can be a kind and free spirit, she deeply ponders on life and also her motives in life and what consequences or results will occur from them.

Humble | Weak-Minded | Dependent

Having her opinions in the spotlight is something that she always dreads. Despite having a lot of ideas to share, she has a low self-esteem that makes her hesitant to bring out major opinions in belief that they’re just whishy-washy thoughts. So while she is socially outgoing, she only prefers to play as the supporter and never make any big decisions. Her lack of leadership easily defines her as a weak-minded person. She does not do well under pressure for a long time. If she is pressured, she would flake out and seek someone to help her or take her role. However, with these traits, she is a relatively easy person to talk to due to her kind and mild disposition. This brings up another thing. She does not do well with being in seclusion and constantly seeks company and friendship.

Restless | Dishonest | Indecisive | Naive

Chouko can never stay in one spot because she feels like life goes by too fast. She will always try to do everything at once and it can be either productive or a complete mess. In addition, she is a habitual liar when it comes to her life and well-being. She dislikes confrontations that focus on digging into her private life to the point of her spinning lies like stories. However, she is more honest towards topics that are not directed towards her life or along the topics of money. Along with her being a horrendous liar, she can never settle on one choice. She puts too much thought into the pros and cons of a given decision that, in the end, she either gives the choice to someone else to make or drops it all together. Her reliability of others makes her an easy suspect to tricks and lies. While she holds a lot of wonderful thoughts, she is not exactly wise and still lacks the experience of reality.

History

◈Beginning◈

Chouko grew up in a peaceful town near the central of Hoshido. Her parents were owners of an artisan woodwork shop and were considered middle class. Chouko grew up with a sheltered, if not slightly pampered lifestyle because of that. Her parents loved her and she loved them, making them a small, happy family. However, her family was always busy making fancy bowls, combs, pins, and so forth that they sometimes never had time to spend with her.

On most days when that happened, she would play with her best friend by the river. On special days, her uncle came into her home donned in the Hoshido armor, a sheathed spear in hand and beautiful stories waiting to be shared.

Her uncle only came when his border patrol allowed him to, but the few times that he did get to leave were the times that told her great stories and taught her lessons; her parents did try to do the same, but they weren’t as good as her uncle’s in her honesty. It was because of her uncle that she learned lessons concepts of fairness, equality, and sharing.

While he was indeed only an uncle, she grew to love him like a second father.

◈Mister Liar◈

She was 14 years of age when her uncle was starting to behave differently and grow distant. He no longer greeted her first and instead of telling her his beautiful stories, he always went to her father saying that ‘he needed urgent help’. The sudden change hurt her.

One day, she approached her uncle when he was left alone in the living room after her father left with a scowl on his face. With a careful poke to her uncle’s tired face, she asked what was wrong. In response, her uncle told her that he was ‘in trouble because he had no money’. Immediately, she felt happy that she could help her uncle and quickly left to pull out the coin pouch hidden under the bedroom tatami mats that contained saved up money for her 15th birthday. Chouko eagerly gave her uncle the money, uncaring of how much it was, and hoped that her help could save her uncle. She never understood why her uncle began to cry as he left her home with the coin pouch… ‘Perhaps it was from joy?’ was all she could think of it.

A month had passed after her uncle left for border patrol and life returned to normal. However, a strange nobleman came to the shop, demanding for her uncle and for a long overdue payment. Her father immediately took up responsibility and paid a portion of the monstrous debt so that the stranger would be appeased. Through all of this, Chouko learned that her uncle had done something terrible, and feared that she had also contributed to it.

She was angry with her uncle for that and waited for him to come back from border patrol to give him a tantrum. However, her uncle did not come next month, or the next. It became apparent then that her uncle wasn’t coming back.

◈Guilt◈

The business went through a rough time after that. With a portion of their income put towards the debt, there was a cut back on luxury and freedom. Chouko had begun helping her parents crafting bowls too. Despite the amount of money being little, she was overcome with guilt for giving her uncle gambling money. Life in her home became mundane as she quickly learned that while she found woodwork to be a fun hobby, she did not want to spend her entire life making it. In addition, despite his flaw, her uncle was no longer there to share his bright stories and she missed him. Because of these, she had slowly fallen into depression.

For three years, her life was focused on crafting items to sell and little time to enjoy life like she used to. Her best friend finally confronted her about her obvious emotional deterioration during a rare break, and that was when Chouko indirectly spilled out her dissatisfaction with her life and missing her uncle. It started as a joke, but her friend had suggested that Chouko join the army to find her uncle and get a new start in life.

Blinded by hope and a sudden wave of excitement, she applauded her friend for the brilliant idea and asked her best friend to help her join the army without worrying her parents. That led to a year of preparation of creating a story, finding transportation and learning basic knowledge of the army in secrecy.

When she turned 18, she bid her parents and her friend farewell under the pretense that she was seeking apprenticeship under a scholar to gain a better education in Central Hoshido.

◈Duty◈

Two years of training for the army of her people have provided her an ample amount of time with the naginata. While her strength is not up to par with others, she learned to wield it with moderate skill during her training and improvising moves to better fit her stature. Throughout her time in the reserve unite, she did attempt to look for her uncle, but after a while, she focused on keeping up with her temporary comrades whom she has grown attached to. Her main goal for entering the army to find her uncle still remains the same. However, after leaving home and staying in the army, she hates to admit but she would rather live for the army rather than stay inside the gilded cage she once called home.

*History notes:

-Chouko’s father has been aware of his brother’s gambling issues and would always cover for him. Hence why he took up the debt.
- It is assumed by her family that her uncle is laying low in the army, or that he fled into neutral grounds.

Voice: Cherami Leigh | JP Voice

:Trivia:

- She swings her naginata both ways…..only in battle of course ( jk, she’s biromantic, but gray-sexual…though she’s not really looking for romance atm )
- she’s actually...illiterate. Really smart and can understand things very well but she is an extremely slow reader. The written language wasn’t required for her to make the bowls so she never learned it in the end.
- Her name means Honey, Butterfly Child, from surname to first name.
- Her family’s business specializes in woodcraft and lacquer, her father contributing to the woodwork and her mother contributing to the lacquer. Chouko contributed more to helping her father carve out bowls, chopsticks, and occasional combs, which is why she has a moderate skill in wood carving. Sometimes, they would halt their usual services when a commission for a fancy statue is made. ( lacquer ex. )
- She did go through a period of heavy depression when she worked for her parents due to the drastic change in her lifestyle. It’s because of this that she fears that she’ll suffer the same mundane life if she returns home, with uncle or not.
- She joined the army in hopes of finding her uncle but has grown attached to the people and straightforward lifestyle of the army.
-Previously opposed to killing people, time in the reserve unit has given her time to reflect that if she wants to live and protect, she would have to kill.
- Her favorite candies were konpeito and chocolate, but with it being so expensive, she only had both of them once in her life so far.
