I've heard of scratchboard but what exactly do you do with it to create art...is it painted on or something?

Sorry for the late reply. Scratchboard is a clay coated board that comes white or pre-inked in black. Then you scratch off the black (or whatever you painted on it) to reveal the white underneath, I use an xacto knife to scrape with so I get really thin lines. Then I use a really diluted ink wash to paint over the scratches to add the color. Ink works best because it doesn't damage the surface at all and you can still make clean scratches.
