I always thought that the one problem of the picture you based this from was the eye. But you definitely fixed it!
The way you drew the checkers is amazing, too; they look so precise and exact.
(And not to mention the hair...I'll be quiet now. XD)

So, I love the hair; you shaded in just the right places. Actually, you shaded in EVERY right place, not just the hair!
One spot that stands out to me is on his cheek; that little bit of white. I think if you spread the white out to cover his entire cheek and not just that little bit, it'd show better contrast...or something. (I'm not quite sure how to word it...I usually don't provide critique. ^///^; )
And I still can't take my eyes off his eye. XD I think it's because the iris has a simple design to it, unlike the original picture. (The original always startled me because he looked much older, and kind of angry. 
I also love how the edge of the lower portion of his face has a soft look to it, thanks to gentle shading. Makes him look like some kind of angel. ^^
Overall, the best aspect is the shading. You probably killed yourself trying to get it right (I know I would have XD), and even if it wasn't hard, I still think it's really worth it. Your version is much gentler to the eye because of it.
I really hope you don't stop drawing Roxas!
