I really like the square format and how you've made it feel more balanced as a result of that, even though the aspects involved make it feel unbalanced, in a way... It also cuts down on the negative space, which is good.
The intensity of the contrast makes the impact more potent overall. I like how the people add a more human touch to things and yet... it's somewhat sad as well, how the four are in sync with each other, leaving the other one behind... I like how the monotone seems to emphasise that feeling further.
I feel as if it a vignette wouldn't hurt, but this piece is pretty good, regardless of that.

yeah I think the square format probably fits this one better
I have a very similar reaction when i look at this picture, although It's strong on the impact, it leaves me a little sad when the underlying message hits me.
About the vigneting you're probably right but I rarely use it unless I want to convey a very specific feeling that is not the one here.
