Description "But Hannah," I hear you ask, "Emily had a green tail in the first picture, how come now she has a blue tail?"

I'm glad you asked, because here's a little known secret about mermaids.  Their tails can change color.  It's a bit circumstantial, but I'll share the details.

First, we all know that the light of a full moon has mystical properties.  Even shows such as H2O manage to get that right.  However, what H2O gets wrong is what those mystical properties do exactly.  It's unlikely that the full moon will hypnotize, trigger a transformation, or have any of those types of superstitious reactions on a mermaid.  Instead, exposure to moonlight, especially when the moon is full, is capable of drawing out and exacerbating hormones and emotions in a way that can sometimes manifest itself physically.  For some, the physical changes are temporary, for others, it's permanent.

Second, a mermaid's coloring is determined by a number of factors.  For some it is purely genetic, for others by subconscious emotions during their awakening.  For others still, it's a combination of the two.  Like with most things in life, everyone is slightly different.

When a tail forms the second time, it's always the same color as the first time, and each subsequent transformation would have the same results.  However, if a mermaid experiences strong enough resonance with their emotions, their tail may change in hue or in tone.  Most of the time the changes are so minor that they're hardly noticeable.  For example, a mermaid with a deep blue tail might find that a hundred transformations later, their tail has a very slight hint of indigo.  It could be years before they even notice it themselves.

However, bringing everything back full circle, emotions that are significantly heightened by moonlight can be resonated with much more profoundly.  The stronger the resonation, the faster the changes manifest.  In Emily's case, the night of the full moon was a clear sky, and one where Emily sat on a rock by the shore gazing at the stars, and ruminating on all her thoughts.  After a prolonged exposure like that, she was sure to experience changes, but Emily was a bit surprised when the next time she transformed, her tail was blue instead of green.

It's hard to quantify exactly what emotions correlate to what color, as it's more spiritual and profound than a simple linear relationship.  I guess it's one of those things that you simply have to experience for yourself
