Description The hidden ocean of Panthalassa is home to a very diverse ecosystem with lineages dating back to Earth's various epochs. Since the incident involving the Taylor family, a Saudi prince, and a new gigantic predator the doors to this hidden world are now open. Several species have escaped into the the wider though few have been successful at establishing themselves. Since establishing their outpost the M.I.P has made numerous expeditions to this dark world to study this world of sea monsters. By far the most majestic has to be the mighty "Rán".

The Rán are gigantic filter-feeding ray finned fish. When they were first encountered by the Saudi crew they with misidentified as a species of Leedsicthys, a fish from the Jurassic Period and one of the largest fish ever discovered. Further research however has disproven this assumption and the similarities are due to convergent evolution. They have yet to be given a proper scientific name but they have been nicknamed "Rán", after a Norwegian ocean goddess who captured her victims in her nets somewhat like how these giants feed on plankton.
Like whales Rán live in small pods of related individuals to deter other giant predators like the megalodon. Like whales the Rán are remarkably intelligent, when one is being assaulted by a predator the rest of the pod coordinates a defense against the attacker with a combination of headbutts and body slams. Also like whales these fish show remarkable parental care, protecting their small litter of newborn spawn until maturity. The Rán don't have vocal cords so they instead communicate with each other through scent and a dazzling array of bioluminescence across their bodies. Since they are so huge they accumulate large amounts of of skin parasites, which in turn attract large schools of small eurypterids(sea scorpions) to get rid of unwanted pests. In turn of keeping their skin healthy Rán don't try to eat these arthropods.

Today Rán very rarely venture out beyond Panthalassa and those that do are never too far away from the entryway. Their population seems to be healthy and as long human interference is kept at a minimum it will likely remain this way.

The Rán are based on creatures from Steve Alten's Meg series, specifically fanart seen here.
