Description “A team is where a boy can prove his courage on his own. A gang is where a coward goes to hide”

This country, and especially London, is currently rife with talk about gang culture and youth crime. Every week, if not more frequently, there is a news item about a gang-related stabbing or about school children being murdered by other school children.

Maybe I am naïve, or more likely I was fortunate enough to go to a ‘good’ school, but when I was growing up the biggest things to worry me were my homework, exams and my current best friend, not avoiding and living in fear of other people.

Granted, a lot of what is routinely reported these days has always been going on and a lot of the hype surrounding these social problems can be attributed to both the Government and media jumping on a band wagon… but despite this it is truly sad to see so much violence and anger about – and perpetrated by such young folk.

It’s also worrying when you get to an age that the prospect of raising a family is not far off the horizon (okay so a matter of some years for me but still the foreseeable future) and you seriously start thinking about the kind of world into which you might be bringing another human life. I know you cannot think in this manner or else we would all have stopped procreating a long time ago. I also know that Baz Luhrmann would suggest that we “don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum”.

He may have a point but if some of that worry can be turned into action then perhaps there is something that can be done? The Government recently outlined plans to protect those coming forward to inform on gangs and it is also asking schools to look out for signs that pupils are being drawn into gang membership, so ostensibly they are trying to tackle the problem. However the problem, it is commonly suggested, stems from deeper issues such as poverty, racism and family dysfunction. Perhaps it is these that we ALL should be trying to fix?

So enough of my pessimism… Pessimism never won any battle

Firstly, please move your photograph to the photojournalism or street category, it is too easily lost under miscellaneous and it would be a shame to see it NOT get the attention it deserves.

It is a powerful image and is accompanied by an excellent piece of writing, well done!

I have always found it fascinating how our perceptions of youth are dictated not by reality, but the media’s presentation of a reality which is, in essence, designed to sell papers. Can anyone think of a time when gangs of young people didn’t hang out in public places? If Shakespeare is to be believed, they were certainly biting their thumbs at one another back in his day. To further quote the very Rev’d Baz Luhrmann: “Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasise that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.”

I was lucky enough to attend a particularly insightful conference in Liverpool recently. The key note speaker pointed out that young people have been behaving in pretty much the same way for years; the only thing that has changed is the society in which they grow up in…and they can’t be blamed for that. Society is not driven by young people, but by middle aged men (and women). The speaker then went on to state some rather sobering facts, which I think are very useful to remind ourselves of whenever we think the word is turning the wrong way: alcohol consumption in the uk is going down year on year (not up as we would be led to believe); it was not uncommon for children as young as 10 to die of cirrhosis of the liver (gin being sold in pints) 150 years ago; in Victorian times, children were subjected to prostitution and sexual exploitation regularly from the age of 13; incest wasn’t illegal until the beginning of the 20th century. The next time you hear someone tell you that things were better in the “good old days” you may want to quote a few of those

You are quite right, though…we do all need to take action to right a few of the many inequalities in our society.

Anyway, my dear, how the devil are you?! Love the feel of this pic
