Description First upload in ages... I'm so busy at the moment So I've already got one picture of the creeps in their little home, but I rearranged them (which I don't often do as it takes about three hours) and wanted to capture how they look chilling out in their corpsey way. And look, a new one! And a new faceup on another!

From left to right:

Wolfe: Mad medical genius gone seriously, seriously wrong, sports a scalpel and an immortality fetish.

Felix: Creepy Scottish pervert hangs for grave-robbing, two hundred years later is brought back to life and resumes former creepy activities.

Matilda: Precocious but irritating little brat is done in by headmistress, returns from the dead, has vengeance thwarted and moves things about with the power of her eyes, allowing for awesome pranks.

Raz: Religious healer to Russian tsar and arrogant wizard type, gets turned into a tooth-fairy to curb his vast hedonistic appetites, enjoys scaring children and blowing things up.

Amleth: Droopy Danish prince vows to kill uncle for murder of father, messes around a bit, fails, gets turned into the undead and goes swooping about on Viking longboats slaughtering Europe, enjoys crosswords.

13: Frog/seaslug/sponge/human hybrid, loves tea, also loves trying to kill everyone, fits snugly into a straitjacket and deep-freeze for easy transportation.

Teal: Ridiculously-dressed demon spawn brings the dead back to life and minces about the place robbing graves without getting dirt on his stupid high heels.

Clairvius: Posh zombie with an Oedipal complex and a penchant for lace and doll-houses, should have been the owner of a Haitian sugar-mill if his jealous uncle hadn't gotten him undeaded.

Topaz: Awkward grungy demon-spawn accidentally kills people and gets a bit angsty about it, rides around on trains for a while, gets quite grubby.

Selkie: Washed-up seal boy gets dumped by his lover, skin stolen by his mother-in-law, causes storms and eats fish and sleeps and sulks.

Thanks! The only place I upload stories about them is here, if you go to my gallery and click on "prose" you'll find lots of stories about their characters. Thanks for the interest!

Love your characters are terribly wonderful - mine would fit right in. Did you make the straitjacket?

Thank you very much! I take great delight in producing utter weirdos. I actually traded it with some shoes I had, but the girl who first owned it had made it by hand. I'm actually going to be making alterations to it to make it fit better - straitjackets should be really tight - but I'm scared to ruin it because it's so awesome!

You're welcome! I think one of my favourite things about BJDs is seeing all the interesting things people do with them and hearing all the creative stories behind the dolls.

I totally agree, it adds a whole new dimension to the dolls. There's plenty of people whose dolls have no backstory at all or even names, and that's fine, but I think if you're inclined to give your dolls rich characterisation then it just opens up a really exciting world ^^

fastfeetnella In reply to Harlequin-Elle [2013-02-05 19:57:21 +0000 UTC]

So very true. While there are people who have dolls without backstories or set characters, I couldn't do that. I end up giving all my dolls characters sooner or later. I'm actually a bit worried that the floating head I'm waiting for is going to develop a character once I recaive it. XD

In my experience, the author has little to no say over the characters they're supposed to be creating. They create themselves. Mine just seemed to spring into life and develop in all kinds of ways I didn't anticipate.
I'm sure it will, they're all plotting against us you know

I run into that so much when I'm writing stories with my dolls' characters in them. I figure out something new about them and how you interact.

My favourite example of a doll developing a character is my second doll, Alwyn. She was my sister's first BJD and was supposed to be a cute lolita girl. But she never looked right in dresses, even very simple ones. I bought her, put her in pants and boom, a character was born. Now she's a bookish, crossdressing, magicain's apprentice.

It's the smile, I can't resist those little resin smiles.

She's an interesting character to write, that's for sure. It's nice to be surprised but it's wonderful when things actually go as planned.

I've seen these creatures on DoA and though I should properly comment instead of creep in the shadows... though the shadows are quite nice...

Wolfyone In reply to Harlequin-Elle [2012-12-09 23:04:25 +0000 UTC]

I can see where they would. BJDs in general are so much more than most dolls. The difference when you first see one is stunning to begin with. But you also have some really unusual looking ones. That would really surprise the average person!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Harlequin-Elle In reply to Wolfyone [2012-12-10 20:17:16 +0000 UTC]

I think the thing with BJDs as opposed to other dolls is the presence they have. They have very vivid, palpable personalities - at least, some of them do. I certainly feel that mine have a very strong presence, and other people who meet them for the first time react as if they're actually meeting real people. It really is like having ten small people crowded into my room. I feel a bit shy in front of them sometimes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wolfyone In reply to Harlequin-Elle [2012-12-10 20:26:26 +0000 UTC]

I agree with that. They seem to be more than just inanimate objects. Plus the stringing that causes them to move on their own is very unsettling when you first come across it. I actually wrote a book, a horror story, where I featured BJDs as a big part of the plot with their lifelike presence and flailing limbs. My daughter, who already thinks dolls are creepy said the book gave her nightmares. She refuses to come into my room at night when I'm at work because she swears she hears the dolls moving around on their own!

Harlequin-Elle In reply to Wolfyone [2012-12-12 16:06:53 +0000 UTC]

Ah, mine have mostly sueded joints so they don't tend to move on their own! Some of them are actually quite stiff, like Felix who to move his head, you have to grasp it really hard and actually lift it off his neck Just advanced rigor mortis I guess!
Oh that sounds really cool, I'd like to read that! It's funny, because even though I don't see my dolls moving, I sometimes hear creaking sounds coming from their corner... but always when I'm not looking! Haha. And the chest they're on is quite far from the ground so if they moved around too much they'd fall some way. Though actually one of them, 13, has a habit of sudden knocking over his loathed creator, Wolfe, onto the floor, and so far he's broken two of his fingers. Very spiteful!

Wolfyone In reply to Harlequin-Elle [2012-12-13 08:55:07 +0000 UTC]

Mine are not sueded and frequently I'll come in and find some subtle position changes. And of course when you pick them up and start positioning them, they just flail. Some more than others. It really wigged me out a bit in the beginning. Which was what inspired me to use them in the book. It's called The Whine in the Closet, and it's available on Amazon in paperback or for Kindle. I write under the name Cynthia Dumarin.

Harlequin-Elle In reply to Wolfyone [2012-12-14 14:57:03 +0000 UTC]

Creepy. Though having said they don't move, I just picked up 13 to find he has somehow scraped all the hot-glue sueding out of his thigh joints. How did he do that?! It's glue for crying out loud! Haha, what a weird kid.
Oh cool! I would love to get a book published! *dreams hopelessly*

You can buy the newer version of his sculpt from Fairyland... which is much more expensive and the old version is available second-hand too. His brother Topaz, the green-haired one standing next to him, is the same sculpt and I bought him second-hand.
