Description It looks better in full view.

Hmm, I'm struggling with the fur on this one. I can't seem to get the light and shade to balance. It looks fine zoomed in but when I switch it back to normal size it all goes weird. Help me out here! What am I missing? Please let me know so I can try to fix it.

Maybe I just need a decent sized monitor (I'm doing this on a laptop screen).

What sort of usage did you have in mind? I imagine it'll be alright if the image is not going to be altered and it's a non-commercial use. Just credit me as normal, and a link back in the comments is always appreciated.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the fur looks fine to me. Great in fact! The whole piece is magnificent! I love the background you chose for this as well...matches the eyes beautifully. Great work!

This is wonderful!!I love the expression,and the fur has a soft but shaggy texture to it which is very convincing!..I hear you on the laptop woes,as soon as I got my big monitor,I have had a great improvement in how easy it is to work zoomed in
My only suggestion would be[not having painted wolves much..but lots of cats?!]that it lacks a little light & shade,if you wanted..photo-realism?I like it as a soft fantasy style portrait at the moment.....charming!
I found with my animal portraits,that looking at photos,& drawing my kitties[]made me realise,we don't see everything,right away,in the same sharpness of detail...so if you gave an illusion of depth of field,it would look stunning[blurring/softening the body a little,and detailing the face a bit more]The eyes & the nose & facial details are beautifully rendered!..the fur seems a little limited in tone...I found that using hues and shades to give a bit more depth[white reflects a tiny bit of the surrounding area]makes fur look more real
I am changing over from traditional art to digital,so I'm still a noob myself[]..but I always find white & black animals[the MOST difficult!] look far more real if you reflect a little bit of sky/foliage/surroundings onto their fur,and use a wider range of tones than just darker/lighter shades of the one hue....but....aside from some minor tweaking,it's looking awesome! A very beautiful wolf!

Hmmm, you are right. I did use a mix of hues in the fur, but I don't think I used them enough. It's the lack of that reflected light that's making it stand out and look wrong. I was trying for that depth of field by making the fur further away more soft/blurry with a broader brush, but it's not enough on its own maybe, it needs sharper, finer detail on the face and muzzle for contrast. I could not get the shadows to look right, so I'll try using values from the background colours and see if that helps. Thanks for the excellent feedback!

Great job! Love the fur and the eyes. Painting white fur is always a challenge, it dosen't leave much room for light and shadow. That's probably what's bothering you about it. I think it looks wonderful. He looks very soft. Keep up the good work!

It might be, at that. It was a challenge to get it to look right, up close. I must be getting used to it now as it doesn't look too bad anymore.

Thank you. I applied the canvas after the painting was finished, and I really liked the effect too. ArtRage has some lovely surface textures.

I think they have a free demo downloadable from their website. I found the control very intuitive, which means they don't get in the way of the painting for me - very important!

I've never tried Gimp. Funnily enough I was looking at it just the other day, when I decided I wanted a decent photo editor but couldn't afford Lightroom.

Gimp is free and quite robust! I'm a fan of freeware. I have photoshop but prefer Gimp. I looked up ArtRage but it doesn't run in Linux and it really didn't look like it would have anything more than what I already have. It does look pretty cool though.

Ah, Linux! Gimp is probably the best then. I'm attracted by the whole plug-in side of things, plus I have a tame Linux programmer in my house to help me out.

I never got along with Photoshop, but Pixelmator seems to imitate its painting effects, unlike ArtRage which is more like a Painter tool - it seeks to imitate actual art materials so its airbrush behaves more like a real airbrush rather than an airbrush tool. That's the main difference, I think.

Gimp does have quite a few plug-ins but I think there's still room to expand there.

I rarely use the airbrush tool, I use mainly the paint brush and smudge tool

The lighting and shadows look fine to me, you've defined the wolf's facial muscles really well and the fur looks beautiful and soft. White fur is always hard to paint, you did a wonderful job
