it's quite simple, you have to use the right brush (photoshop) which is one.. well I don't know how to explain it but it's one that depends on presure, so you can trace softer or harder.. for shadows I usually use a new layer fully colored that darkens the whole picture, and with the eraser (with that type of presure-brush) y light some zones (so it's not applying shadows, but shadowing everything and then erasing)
