An octopus mystery
I was watching this National Geographic about octopi once where they had this marine bio lab at a university or something. They had all these tanks with various exotic fish and sea creatures set up on the counters on all 4 walls. But every so often, the fish in one of the tanks would just disappear. Suspecting that someone was stealing them, they interrogated the researchers, the cleaning staff, etc. Everyone denied it. It was messing up their studies to have the subjects disappearing all the time so finally they set up security cameras. It turns out that in the middle of the night, the octopus on the other side of the room would climb out of its tank, run across the room to the other side, climb up the counter and into the fish tank, eat the fish, then run back across the room and back to its own tank. By morning, the tracks had dried up and the octopus would be sitting in its tank, all innocent-looking. Damn clever!

The saddest story I ever heard of an octopus, was this one in a circus, that was trained to do a trick, and it was given food, every time it performed this trick. And then one day it was sold from the circus, and no one fed it, and it did the trick over and over and over, but no one fed it, until one day it pecked itself to death.
