God this took forever T.T; But I'm fairly proud of it, since I spent a good amount of time on it ^.^
Basically, this takes place a little bit before Mello's death. I imagine that it's difficult for him to purposefully die (which I think he did so for Near~), and I think that Near didn't know of his plan to begin with, but he knew that something was wrong...
It's all so very tragic (TTATT;;
The more I look at this, the more I think it looks like one of those Death Note wall scrolls >>;

In my mind, both-sided MelloxNear is true 
Personally, I believe that Mello and Near were in love during these times (and beforehand), though a bit on the denial side on Mello's part. I think though as time began drawing closer to Mello's death, he began to accept his feelings for Near more, though the death made things all the more tragic for them... If you look, you can see that Mello has one of Near's puzzle pieces in his pocket in my picture. Near having the rosary and Mello having the puzzle piece acts more of symbolization for this explanation, as they each have part of the other. I hope that answers your question
