For some reason, it seems to be much harder to get positive feedback from the art community when you are into humor. I am not talking about my little self, but in general: for example, comedies are generally not much rewarded at the Oscars ceremony, or humorists are often considered as worthless actors by their peers. It is a bit like if humor was too popular, too accessible, to get recognition from the intellectual sphere. This is a bit sad, since creating a really funny work of art is not easy at all, and certainly requires specific talent (Monty Pythons, Charlie Chaplin, the Marx Brothers, just to name a few classics).

Anyway, I personally always enjoy creating humorous images. It is a very good occasion to try silly things in order to be funny - of course it often fails, but who cares. So I tried to imagine a situation where someone was doing something the wrong way for the fun part, but also where some fantasy was going on. This is how I arrived at that magical side, and this poor magician having troubles with the usual "rabbit-in-the-hat" trick.

From a technical point of view, I did my best to come up with a dynamic composition: the tilted hat looked quite good in the foreground, creating a diagonal with the magician in the background. However, at this stage the 2 main components where too dissociated, so I worked hard to make them appear more "linked", if that makes sense. In order to do that, I used some smoke, but mainly the wand: its direction and the blue light coming out of it was the best "tricks" I found for that purpose.

Regarding my face, I tried a lot of possibilities, but they were all just bad (yes, even more than this one). In order to look really grumpy, I decided to take this self portrait just after waking up: one always look totally off in the morning, at least for a few minutes So all the lighting was set the evening before, and when I left the bed I directly went to the studio and took a few photos during 5 minutes. My wife laughed when she saw the result, this is how I knew it worked as intended

I couldn't begin to tell you how impressed I am with the concept, execution and overall look of this piece.  I can tell that you truly enjoy doing what you do.  You have a great attitude towards it too.  You're definitely going on my watch list.  (no creepyness intended)  You're just awesome!

I think you are right. Humour just seems to easy. Funny Funny movies always draw a huge crowd. When I did poetry my simple funny poems were wildly popular. They took five minutes to write. While things I worked a long long time people rarely reacted to. Whether it is poetry, sculpture, paintings, or movies. It is hard to gather people around the serious stuff even if the critics are off their asses with praise.
What the critic elite need to realize is that good comedy draws crowds. When humour falls flat every body talks about how bad it is. Not naming any names. Sinbad. Those people who do GOOD comedy deserve just as much praise as anyone else. As anyone who fails to get a laugh will tell you. Comedy is hard!

Great work.

Interesting comments about comedic imagery. I suppose anything funny is by definition not serious, so one tends not to make serious comments about it - perhaps by fear of taking away from the comedy aspect.

Personally I love funny images and definitely do admire the high quality work of yours as well as the humour.

I also find it interesting to read through your working process of figuring out the composition.

Good idea to take the picture in the morning! I might have to steal that idea if I ever need a grumpy picture of myself Other than that, I just gotta say that I love this piece of art. Not only is it very funny, but it's extremely well made! A quality peace of comedy!

Good point about comedians getting as much recognition as they deserve, though there are comedians who do get a lot of praise today, and with good reason. I'm talking about people like Tim Minchin, Jon Stewart and George Carlin (last one got a lot of praise while he lived as well). I think the comedians and comedy that gets the most praise, are those who are properly though-through and well done. Good comedy today seems to not only make you laugh, but also think.
