Intended or not, but I love how it's from the perspective of the Dark Elf. The darkness of the woods is familiar, comforting, normal; the sunlight breaking through the canopy is too bright, alien, painful.

Good art. Albeit I find it weird. I only know of the Dark Elves due to the works of Salvatore. However there the were described as ebon-skinned. But here and in practically every illustration I came across they are depicted with gray skin.

Thanks! Elves from Salvatore do have ebon skin. This one is not from Salvatores books. He is just... different elf

And actually even in the few games from the Forgotten Realms series the dark elves I had seen (I think even in the guide to the underdark) they were portrayed grey and not ebon.

Sadly not the ones of the Dark Elf Trilogy and following books I read years ago. The cover of Starless Nights showed an old man in his sixties I think. While the age was correct I doubt that the artist had any idea that he was painting an elf that still looked like a human barely in his early twenties.
I think one should know what he/she illustrates.

It's true. I usually read books before I will illustrate them. This is not a great feature, because not all books worth it.
