Not meaning to be the strong, silent type. Since I'm new here (to Deviant Art) I'm having some difficulty navigating all the pages and so forth. I just now noticed a reply button.
I've been published several times, I have a B.A. majoring in art, but I currently work as a custodian at a school. The starving artist type. Does this make me a professional? I suppose it depends on how you define it. I was one of several winners in the Illustrators of the Future contest in the late 90's and was flown to Florida for workshops and awards ceremonies. I met several major illustrators in the field of Science Fiction and Fantasy, including the late great Frank Frazetta.
So could you tell me please: what is the reason for Deviant Watch messages? I've clicked on those and seem to find writings or blogs or something or other which don't immediately seem to pertain to me. Does it mean I should watch them, or that they're watching me? Okay, so much for being silent...

I say you should be a proffesional, you are one of the most skilled people iv seen on here Shame the world craps on people... i know so many who hae talent and arnt used, my partner is trying to get somewhere with his art on here too. I can see why you won awards, you'll get a following on here once you get used to it.
So the messages you get are the people or groups that you've watched, there is a button on peoples pages at the top to watch them, it gives you updates on there journals, poll's and art as its uploaded. With groups when you join, you get stacks of the work submitted to the group, when you add work to the group it goes in the stacks too, everyone in the group can get views that way.
Groups are the only way to get many views, the more groups you join and submit works to the more they are seen, you can join as many as you want but they all have different rules, and are for different types of art. In the drop down menu where it says Devient Art at the top, there is a group's option, there you can search through groups, you can type in key words like for you pencil art, and traditional groups..
Once you find a group you like, read the rules on the page or ask by leaving a message, theres a button at the top saying join, once you have been approved (it comes up in messages) you can submit, by going to there page and clicking submit, or go to the gallery of the group and there's an option to submit to each folder.
Iv got over 40 groups now, but its hard to keep up with the stacks, you needent do them everytime, most people do them once a week. The more people you visit fave and talk to the more will come back to you. If someone watches you/faves or llamas then its polite to visit there page, comment and thank, if you like there stuff watch them, it will improve your rating.
Short comments and simple thank you's gets less attention than long comments and questions, people take an interest if you do
The only people who wont respond are people who get thousands of views, look under the pic at the other comments, if the artist replys to them they will be more open to talking/viewing your works, dont bother if they dont reply to others.
Any questions ask me or anyone, everyone is pretty friendly
Nice to meet you, i'll be your first friend

Thanks for the info. I'll keep this note for future reference.
Thanks also for the comments. They're very much appreciated.
I guess I'd better revisit the llamas I have and thank all the commentators.
