Sometimes on a photo shoot at Wolf Park, especially after you've been in with the pack for some time and they've become accustomed to you being in their home, they like to get "up close and personal" with the seminar participants (which of course thrills us to death!). I captured one such moment as Wotan sniffs a fellow seminar participant. Sadly, I never did catch his name or exchange email addresses with him as I did with a couple of others, as we frequently capture sweet moments like this that we enjoy sharing with each other. But I love the look on Wotan's face! What a sweet boy!Location: Wolf Park, Battleground, IN

Yes, by this time, we'd been in with them for quite some time and they are now curious and interested in us. So, when the opportunity arises, they will check us out. We are now a part of their world for the time being.....

When you volunteer at a wolf sanctuary for a long time, and the really shy ones, get the courage to come inspect you, it feels like a great honor. <3

Aren't they though!!!! One year I went and for some odd reason, no one would kiss me...I must not have smelled right that year. It broke my heart. But I've been smothered with wolf kisses, plus I've been "pranked" by them pretty good too! It's been the only place that I've literally laughed until I cried.

Amazing shot! I love the content look on Wotan's face as he slowly learns about his
visiter. So calm, not excited at all...is simply taking the time to learn about this human.

Hi there! They get really excited when we first go into the enclosure! Then, after they have investigated everyone and greeted everyone (they are allowed one crotch sniff, which is typical of a canine) and they work their excitment out, then they are ready to get on with life and have us follow along or, at times, make us a part of it. Like this last visit, I was hunkered down to take a shot and my two favorite boys who like to play jokes on me came out of the lake, dripping wet, and made me a "wolf sandwich" between them!
And I LOVE sharing my love of these wonderful creatures with you! Thank YOU for looking!

They really are amazing! Do you have any shots of them turning you into a "wolf sandwich"? That would have been awesome. I read that you sometimes share emails with the other people so that you are able to share photos that were taken, that's why I ask. Be a little hard to take photos yourself while being smooshed between the two pranksters! lol Well like I said, thank you so much for sharing! Keep up the great work!

Sadly no one that I know of captured the "wolf sandwich". When I was "wolf swarmed" on another occasion, the staff photographer and world renowned wolf photographer Monty Sloan, captured that and kindly shared the shots, but I don't post those as he is a professional and that is his work. So, out of respect to him, they have not been posted. But let me tell you what happened....in case you haven't heard the story because it's quite funny! I was body slammed by someone, I don't know who started it, but they easily knocked me off of my feet. As soon as I was down, two others decided to join in on the fun! After I got up, Monty called me over and he had shot the entire thing! I literally laughed til I cried. What you saw was 3 wolves and one arm extended up in the air holding a camera!!!! Above all, we MUST protect the camera!!!

I've seen some of the photos that Mr. Sloan has taken....BREATH TAKING! And I fully understand
why you will not post his work. Makes perfect sence. But maybe you could ask his permission if something like that was to ever happen again and then credit him in the post. Just for the sake of sharing an amazing moment like that. But I do get it. And I just bet that must have been the most hilarious thing to see...all these wolves and right there in the center of all them is this arm extended into the air holding a camera for it's safety! I can just picture that and it's making me laugh! I'd probably frame and hang that shot...just for when ever I needed a little giggle. With the sounds of these characters...you probably have to do a lot of camera protecting! lol Just awesome!

Going to Wolf Park and being around the pack is beyond words of course, but it's also so wonderful to be able to learn from Monty. He's a really nice guy and now I've known him for years. He's even kind enough to answer my emails and, for the last competition I entered with my wolf photography, he kindly examined it and gave me a critique which I valued so much!!! The shot is funny and I've valued so much that he has shared with me MANY shots of me that he has taken of me with the wolves. He captured a big ol' kiss right on the lips that is very precious to me! And some shots of me interacting with Tristan by the lake when I had NO idea that he was shooting me at all....truly precious shots simply for that fact....all natural! Moments so precious! He's just the best!

He sounds like a genuinely nice person. It's always a pleasure
to meet a person like that. It's great that he's taken the time to help
you out/give his opinions on your work. That's sweet. It's people
like that, it just makes them that more likeable. You already like
their talent/work. And then to see that there is a humble side
to them that's willing and isn't too busy to answer an email or give
a few tips on ones photos. That's fantastic! Must be some great work,
you and the wolves, no pose for the camera, just a natural interaction
between you and the wolves that just happen to be captured on film.

You are 100% correct on that! When a person is not only THAT good at being a photographer but then turns out to be just a really nice person too (not a snob), then the world is so good! There is NOTHING fancy at all about Monty! As for those shots...you know, being a person who doesn't like to be in a photograph myself (I like being on the other side of the camera) the way that he took those shots just MADE them. All of my concentration was on Tristan. It was a "moment" between Tristan and I and those shots will forever be precious to me, especially now that he is growing older and probably will not be with us for many more years.

I do, I understand. This will sound crazy but I actually just got chills..."I get it". Yours and yours alone. And with his permission, of course...and if you even decide to one day, it would probably be like sharing a piece of yourself. It's a precious moment in your life you can never get back, change or alter...and it's all yours. That's something that one holds very tightly and close to their heart. I know I would, so I totaly get it!
And I love that he's not a snob...That makes me SO happy to hear that! It makes liking his work that much more enjoyable! And what I have seen of his work, all I can say is..."OMG, BREATHTAKING!!!" Such an amazing job!
