I think you drew a red-tailed hawk or another hawk... but this is no peregrine falcon, sorry!

Grwobert In reply to LisaPannek [2011-02-21 14:54:41 +0000 UTC]

Thanks- what makes you say that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LisaPannek In reply to Grwobert [2011-02-21 21:35:48 +0000 UTC]

The whole anatomy is more similar to a hawk than to a falcon. Falcons are very slight and long with long wings and a long tail. An adult peregrine has horizontal stripes on the bottom side and a striking black marking on the head. Have a look at this: [link]

In my opinion it looks like a red tailed hawk - I only criticise the name, not the drawing. I like your style of hatching

Hiya
I totally agree with your comments (I am by no means a bird expert).

I suppose I took some artistic licence with the head and the markings. My aim there was to focus on the peircing eye and a paler surround makes the eye pop more as the focus.
And I definitely filled out the body and the stance to give it a more imperialistic and powerful look.
Reduced the relative size of the head (in the way they do for super-heros in comics) for am more iconic / heroic look... hmmm.
I guess what I mean is that this is a piece of art that's inspired by the Peregrine Falcon, rather than meaning to be an anatomical study or a photo-realistic representation.
Maybe how a Peregrine might look on a coat-of-arms -- just my interpretation of the bird.
I'm flattered if you think it looks enough like a bird for us to be discussing which species it looks like.
You're right that perhaps the title should have been less specific - however, the name derives from my original source.

It's often said that paintings tell you more about the artist than the subject. I think, in this case, maybe that's true.

Thanks again for your interest.

Wing-Giver1 In reply to Grwobert [2010-08-31 19:36:36 +0000 UTC]

thankyou very much for your supportive comment!
abstract is a very special kind of style.
There are no limits to what one can do with abstract.
You dont need skill, you only need an idea, thought, feeling, vision, etc.
I usually paint when im in a certain mood and i just let the paint brush flow and focuss on that mood. For example, if im really relaxed and calm i tend to use softer colors and more rounded softer shapes but if im in an agitated mood i use darker colors and harder rigid shapes. it just depends on what feeling i want to express. i guess my style would be considered abstract emotions if there is such a thing. but non the less, it creates a very dramatic effect.
I would love to see your abstract work so please let me know when you get into it
