Description I was out taking some reference pictures for my next painting project and had to revisit this tree. There were some people walking over the heath, one of whom told me that this was called the Blasted Oak. Not sure if it's true or why exactly but I liked the name

Saw this and wondered at the name...Where was this taken? And was it in mainland Europe or the Isles? I was just thinking that maybe part of it got blasted by artillery or mortar or an aerial bombardment in one of the World Wars and survived, thus the name. Awesome pic.

Hi, the picture was taken on Bawdeswell Heath in Norfolk, UK. I have no idea why it's called that, if indeed it really is - there doesn't appear to be any damage to it but it's a good theory Glad you like the picture though.

I was wondering, could use this tree as a reference for a tattoo I'm planning on getting?

Nice shot of a nice tree. I think it may be called a "blasted Oak" due to the colour and texture of the bark which may represent blasted steel or sandstone.

the exposed roots are am interesting feature !

Now that's what I can impressive!

The roots in the foreground resemble legs, or arms, creeping across the ground I think!

It looks very old! There's a felling of mightiness and wisdom over such old trees.

grimleyfiendish In reply to Jimpan1973 [2007-10-31 08:53:16 +0000 UTC]

It's quite old but not that old by Oak standards. I agree completely with you about the mightiness and wisdom. I always feel comfortable, at peace if you like, when I'm around old trees like this - I have no idea why

It's such an amazing tree!!!

grimleyfiendish In reply to davincipoppalag [2007-10-31 09:00:11 +0000 UTC]

It's one of my favourites around this area. Unfortuantely it doesn't seem to get the respect it deserves. There are remenants of old rope swings on some of the branches and a couple of current ones. I'd hate to turn up one day to see a limb broken off because of this. The heath it's on also has a litter problem - a mark of the decline in the respct for our natural world that, sadly, seems to be spreading across our nation .

Not just your nation..it's worldwide.. everything is throw-away and many people don't care where they throw it. It's truly disgusting the disregard many have for the environment.
