Description Look deep enough into a crystal ball ...

... and you'll see a very nicely distorted reflection of yourself.

A classical wizard looks into his crystal ball, not seeing much.

This is a doodle that evolved a bit, intended for the weekly DeviantDeadlines challenge that this time has the theme "Crystal" [link] . Nothing special, but it was fun to play with light defraction and reflection.

MyPaint + GIMP, a few hours. No references used (except my own hands here and there). It's something of a quickie, but feedback is appreciated as always!

UPDATE: Edited the crystal ball to be more crystal-ball like.

A true masterpiece, the detail of the light reflecting on the ball is perfect. Also the shading on the reflection gives it that dark and scary mood. the hands are perfectly done with each being the same size and shape, also the symmetry of this piece is clearly found as you can i like the way you outlined the ball to give it that clear, and spherical shape. the textures of the wood are done very, very beautifully. Finally, the values on the whole entire piece is absolutely fantastic. Final Review: Your vision is clear. The originality is definitely there. Your technique is awesome. And the impact on me was a dark, what-lies-inside-me kind of feeling.
Amazing!

Thankyou, this is a very encouraging review. I'm glad you like it and that the mood of the piece seems to come across!

It kind of looks like a battle between glass and a pearl. The actual result is very pretty looking though, shiny attractive ^_^ And the reflection looks correct, I have no idea how distorted it would be, I have no crystal balls

Hehe, I do rely heavily on the fact that most people don't actually own a crystal ball of their own - lest they'd no doubt find all manners of faults in the reflections here.

To an un-crystal-ball-experienced eye (such as mine) I guess this works as an approximation though. As long as you find it shiny attractive, I'm happy.

Looks very good. Nice reflections and textures, but the table doesn't look solid.

Heh, that's because the "table" is infact a piece of cloth. Alas, most people seem to think it's some sort of wood. ^_^;

I love the way you did the lighting on the ball, I really wish I could do things like that. I'm really bad at judging where the light should be coming from when I draw, so my shading is really iffy.

The ball is indeed tricky to get right, I've remade it a few times already after feedback from people thinking the first version looked more like the bottom of a bowl... ^_^;

I think the way you put the light spots on the top of it makes it not look like a bowl, but without it, maybe it could be.

Awesome! Great interpretation! I especially like the way you've been painting and texturing fabrics lately, it looks rather wonderful. I see no anatomy flaws or lighting issues or anything, which is good! Something about the colour scheme is throwing me off (maybe it's the blue sleeves), but that's likely just personal preference. Also, I immediately thought of Escher when I saw this (you know the one), which is fun!

Glad you like it! Especially MyPaint's "modelling"-brushes makes soft cloth folding relatively easy to shape and structure.
The colour scheme is a bit stark mayhaps, using the primary complementary colours for maximum contrast between the sleeves and the underlying surface. But I actually toned it down a bit already though, the original was done even brighter.
Escher is for me mostly weird staircases impossibly closing in on themselves, but after your mention, I find that he did do studies of spherical reflections too, cool!

Heh, that would be something. No, not quite that old, magical and white-bearded yet.
