Could have been a some kind of Christmas gift exchange gone wrong. Example, if it was a lottery drawing system with gifts having their own number, it is possible that whoever bought had someone else in mind when they where making the purchase.
Also, speaking of coffee, there was an interesting DMCA takedown slip up last month by a music group known as Total Wipes where coffee was being targeted.

Penalizing screw ups like this with fines would encourage double checking the links before submitting them. As for what to do with the money, if they can't use it to improve the review process, donating it to charity would be another good idea.
