This is my portal to the nether. it actually works perfectly
ports there and back exactly never have a problem with it. this is actually in a room in my big palace. the stairs fall away on the side of the torches and there is a drop all the way to bedrock which i filled with lava. so giant lava pool below. sollid lava on the sides are actually large lava pillars but from where im standing looks like its just two lava walls 
skull and skeleton fingers on the top were a bit of a pain but in the end it all worked out.Download for best result.

My (still in progress, as of 11/1/2011) skull tower sucks in comparison to this. The only (slightly) impressive thing about it is its size. The aesthetics blow ass, since the tower is as plain as hell. I suppose that the tower's size is an attempt to make up for the poor aesthetics.
Humorously, this means that the tower's size IS a method of compensating for something.

it can when you can actually spawn the purple portal stuff itself, instead of having to use obsidian

oh deffinately you could make a portal to the nether that is only the size of 1 block. its really useful

im pretty sure you only have to be touching the purple portalish stuff for it to actually work. after experimenting with nether portals i Have been teleported back OUT of the nether into a single portal block on accident, making half of my body stuck in a wall. just like if you were to get buried in sand. not very healthy. was just stating that it IS possible to make a portal that small

originally i wanted an actual skeleton coming OUT of the wall and Grabbing the stairs going down. maybe even have it like roaring and lava coming out of the sides of its mouth. this is what i may change it to in the future if i get time

i really didnt like how small the nether portals were. i found out that using mc edit you can actualy spawn the purple portal stuff that goes inside the obsidian. so boom mega huge portal mwahaha.
