This pretty much would have been a ton of help when I first started horseland and making graphics. An overall excellent tut. And you even informed me a of a new stock site, thanks!
Tisko (yea I had a name change, I guess I'm still a little stupid, eh?)

This is by no means a bad tutorial, but you should include (and learn about) more information about Creative Commons. Most, if not all, CC images have a Share Alike clause, which means that if you use the image as part of another (i.e. photomanip), then you must make your available to be used by others as well.

Also, the stock from sxc that you say is for "paying members" is actually part of sxc.hu's sister site, which is where you pay for stock. Everything on sxc.hu is free. Some artists also require notification when their stock is used, so it's important to check the license of the sxc images as well.

But thank you for getting this out there and trying to bring attention to how to find good images. It's nice to see others catching on!

this type of tutorial has the potential to be very BORING, but i am pleased to say that i actually enjoyed reading every word of this one. you worded everything beautifully and most of your comments were funny and enjoyable and just overall well put. great job:this should help many many people out there.
