Gullum or Su or Sua is the god that resides over the Cats Way. He calls all the shots.I wrote a little bit about him already on this deviation greekceltic.deviantart.com/art… , but here's a little more,
Sunrise and sunset are sporadic in the Cat’s Way. It stays night most of the time. The cats believe that the Sun is the combined spirit of their ancestors and is only loaned to them when Su, their god, can spare it. Su’s entire existence is spent stoking the sun’s fire with new spirits while Gyb Winks tend his fields. His full form is monolithic, but that's not that easy to draw interacting with other characters so he also comes conveniently gnome sized.
If you're not familiar with Gyb Winks yet I... can't help right now. It's complicated. Just imagine that they are poltergeist cat nannies.
I call him Su mostly because it's simple but I like all three names and why can't a god have three names?

when Su uses their sparks to fuel the sun, are they burnt and used up? or do they just loan energy, and remain after helping light the world?

They remain for a while! The cats believe you may eventually burn up, but they hang on to the chance of one more rebirth.

so their powering the sun is voluntary in exchange for the potential for rebirth? can one opt to not return to the sun, and if so, where do they go? do they just reside in the cat's way, or is there a place for those who do not volunteer their fire?
(sorry if this is too much of a barrage of questions/things you have already addressed; i feel like it's been a while since i've seen cat's way stuff so i may have gotten a bit rusty haha)

They like to think it's voluntary but really it isn't. Su is pretty straight forward about what he wants cats to do when they die their second death. They either power the sun, or get selected to be reborn. Most of them don't seem to mind, I think they see burning as a long warm sleep (which it probably is). Like the equivalent of an afternoon nap in the sun, but forever.
