And speaking of odd crops, HERE'S ONE! I really didn't want the shiny bald head in the way. Really, really. So here's the top half of Summer Bird's head as he completely ignores the crowd beside him. The absolute picture of composure.Related content

I really like this shot. I think the oddness of it is just what makes it so great.
for one, it really focuses on the eye, which is just great, 'cause horse eyes are really pretty and overlooked most of the time if they don't stand out.
second, you see him, and he looks sooo intent. like, forget those people, let's run already! But yet, he portrays himself calmly. The only eagerness is given away by his ears, which, as you can see, look alert. But if you look, it seems as if his eyes and his ears are focused on one thing - the track.
third, it's just a really good shot. Summer Bird is so clear. I think the only thing that makes it look odd (which, if you weren't looking for it, you'd never catch it or think anything about it) is the hand on the rein. If that hand had just been moved just so, it would have been perfect.
Fourth, it's a good thing you didn't want that shiny bald head in the way. Because then the attention would be on the head and how shiny it was, not on 'The Other Bird' as we so call him.

I love this picture. The weird cropping makes it look so awesome. How oblivious the crowd is to him reminds me of some foreshadowing. And that chick in the cowboy hat...I lol. She's like giving Summer Bird the stink eye.

I know! I was actually shocked at how many cowboy hats and then hats like someone would wear to the Derby. It was a bit weird.
Summer Bird is a pretty guy isn't he? And he's so early in his career, it's gonna be awesome to see where he goes after wards.

I especially love this shot with most of the crowd ignoring him and most likely looking towards the other big shots.
I've liked Summer Bird ever since his fast-closing finish in the Arkansas and expected him to at least hit the board in the Belmont, given how fast the track was. Just didn't expect him to actually WIN it!

I'd noticed that as well - and I'm glad somebody else picked up on it! That Arkansas Derby clued a bunch of people in, but it's amazing how few. Nicely spotted!

Thank you! And I applaud Dunkirk on his 2nd place finish. I'm not a fan of his (at all) and think his popularity is severely overblown by his yearling pricetag, but I applaud him in a gutsy well-done in the Belmont.

It took me a while to get onto the Dunkirk bandwagon for exactly that reason, but I was beyond impressed with his Florida Derby run - to be beaten by only about 2/5 of a second in a race that broke the track record in his third career start? Brilliant. I expect big things from him now.
