I've been wanting to make some moon exposures with clouds, but never got around to it.

I know you have the patience to do it though! It takes more patience for you to get those wonderful animal photos!

This was lucky, but I was waiting for the sun to set and the moon to rise a little higher. This was taken shortly after dusk, so the red halo is partly a remnant of the sunset, and partly the refraction of light through a very thin cloud layer.

I missed a similar shot the night before that may have been better. So on this night that I took this picture, I picked up my camera and went to the park just after sunset with the moon in mind. So, in a way, this was planned. The clouds were luck.

That lighting is natural, because the moon is actually behind a thin layer of clouds in this shot, so the refraction of light through the clouds makes it seem all that brighter in the image.

Now that I think of it, I tried to lighten it to get more cloud, but then I lost the moon features with less than the tiniest tweak in curves, When I tried to darken it, I lost the clouds, so I ended up with no other edit except some cropping. And the color comes from the reflection of the sunset, which was, at that time, below the horizon but still fairly bright (sunset was a little after 9 that time of the year).
