Description The coat of arms of His Serenity Edmond de Rothschild, Doge of Israel.

A French member of the Rothschild banking family, Baron Edmond James Benjamin de Rothschild was a strong supporter of Zionism. The baron took little active part in banking, instead pursuing artistic, philanthropic, and scientific interests. His large donations lent significant support to the Zionist movement during its early years, which helped lead to the establishment of the State of Israel. For his Jewish philanthropy Baron Edmond became known as HaNadiv HaYadu'a (Hebrew: "The Known/Famous Benefactor").

In a diary entry for 7 June 1895, Zionist activist Theodor Herzl envisaged that the new Jewish state would be modeled along the lines of medieval Venice: "We shall probably model the Constitution after that of Venice, but profit by her bad experiences by preventing them. If the Rothschilds join with us, the first Doge is to be a Rothschild. I will not and never shall be a Doge, for I wish to secure the state beyond the term of my own life."

Concerning the Arab population of Palestine, de Rothschild recognised that the overriding interest of the Jews was the confidence and the friendship of their Arab neighbours. While not always supportive of an inclusive government, he stated in a 1934 letter to the League of Nations that "the struggle to put an end to the Wandering Jew, could not have as its result, the creation of the Wandering Arab."

Blazon
Quarterly: First quarter, or, an eagle displayed sable (referring to the Imperial and Royal Austrian Coat of Arms); Second and third quarters, azure, an arm bearing five arrows (a symbol of the unity of the five sons of Mayer Amschel Rothschild); Fourth quarter, or, a lion rampant gules (referring to the Hessian Electoral Coat of Arms). Over all an escutcheon: gules, an oval target with pointed center argent per bend-sinister (alluding to the name Rothschild, German for "red shield").
Crest: A ducal crown.

I blame TiltschMaster for this.

Hello, I like the shield, would you have it vectorized to make a sticker and in stationery?

You can tell this was an idea conjured up in the days when Monarchy was the ultimate imprimatur of political legitimacy!

The Venetian model is a curious choice to go with, though - maybe they were attracted by its mercantile policies...

Either that or they were so excited by the idea of their own Carnival that they got a little carried away with enthusiasm for the rest of the Most Serene Republic!

I couldn't say, having never visited Venice or New Orleans ... or Notting Hill, now one thinks about it.

It's a common practice in New Orleans.

Why a duchy, and not a full-blown kingdom?

Because the scepter shall not depart from Judah.
