Are you kidding me? Look, I don't want to underrate the artist's work (I like this comic you know) but sometimes we unknowingly create Mary Sues or Gary Stues. I'm not saying she's 100% Mary Sue but damn. Explain to me why you think she's not, please.

Nope, being a Mary Sue doesn't mean she had to bang all of Tamriel or have an unbelievable past or being freaking overpower. Here, check this info tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php…

And where, exactly, does it imply she's a Mary Sue according to that article? Claiming she's one and not giving any kind of productive example is not very helpful.

I know what means being a Mary Sue, may be I can't correctly describe it in English or it is influence of our community
Mary Sue has an unusual appearance (similar to author's, but incredibly idealized), name like putana"s nickname - Eleonora, Snezhana, etc (mostly American or Italian names), all male characters fall in love with her, all female characters want to be her friends, she's extremely talented in all areas, often unusual like she can see the future, she's always lucky and usually very rich, Fanfic itself has a very poor grammar and author nearly 12 y.o.

Squaloris In reply to asunochka [2014-12-11 19:49:15 +0000 UTC]
Nah, same problem with English here xD
Ok, let's see the unusual appearance, behaviour, etc. Her dress for example isn't lore friendly at all. This is supposed to be a medieval world (magic aside) and not even a prostitute would wear that. Then you have those cheap slut jokes "hurr durr I can't find my panties". She's shown as a childish and promiscuous Bosmer with little to no brain, then she's kind, sweet and smart with an abandoned Argonian, then she throws a tantrum out of nowhere and she's useless as a retarded cow. She's clearly annoying the main character but -gasp- suddenly he cares so much about her! And oooh poor thing she's been kipnapped by vampires and Valen has to save her and risk his life because apparently he has a crush on a stupidly annoying girl that he tried to ignore! Please.
Look, I'm not trying to convince you. Just saying why I think she's a Mary Sue.

Yeah, the dress is a little ... short, and the panty scene is a little silly, but hey fan service! Manga do it all the time. ^^

If I may bud in on the discussion: I would in short discribe a Mary Sue a an idealized author avatar. Someone the author would consciously or subconsciously like to be.
Seeing how much love for detail Neilas emotions get, and how believable she sometimes acts (especially on this page, the reaction to discovering being a vampire) she could very well be a Mary Sue after that definition. But to really know that, you'd have to know the author personally, I guess.

Talinra In reply to Maveric13 [2014-12-10 13:15:46 +0000 UTC]
Making someone's emotions detailed and intriguing does NOT imply they are a Mary Sue.
You were right with the definition that a Mary Sue can be an idolized version of the author, yet Neila really doesn't seem to be loved and adored by everyone and she is obviously not extremely powerful. To me, she seems very much like a naïve, young girl. That's it.

Maveric13 In reply to Talinra [2014-12-12 08:44:19 +0000 UTC]
What I meant was, it's easier to invest in a character, especially on the emotional side, if that character is someone, you'd wish to be like. It doesn't mean, that has to be the case, to write a good character, and it certainly doesn't mean, that Mary Sues are well written. Often quite the contrary, and that's why I wouldn't describe Neila as a Mary Sue. Maybe She is an Avatar for hell, or Gotha, but she doesn't fill the over idealized-part.
The old one did though. And yes, so did Valen, and Ashibi for that matter. A Main Cast of Mary Sues, and Gary Stus. ^^ But, it was fun at the time.
The Problem is: There is no concrete definition for Mary Sue, and one of the core factors of the original, namely dating a prominent member of the canon cast, hardly applies to a Setting where the protagonist is by definition created by you.
Funnily enough I reacently read an official Starwars story sporting a pretty much text book example of a Mary Sue: On some backwater planet, Luke Skywalker meets a young woman potent in the force, and takes it apon himself to train her as a Jedi. She masters the force within days, has an affair with Luke, and dies a tragic death in the end, to safe everyones lifes. So no, Neila IMO doesn't qualifiy as a Mary Sue, except for maybe the author avatar part. But you tell us dear authors

soo...It came to the point where I had to google that term cause apparently its not what I renember it to be...
And I don't get it. Like I know that Valen was pretty much a male Mary Sue in the old ver. of CoV, but...Neila, Mary Sue...thats a new one

GothaWolf In reply to Mulunia [2014-12-17 23:49:54 +0000 UTC]
Permament Detect NPCs for 4000 points around you, 25 points of Night Eye.
As for attributes and skills: Strength, Agility, Speed, Endurance, Hand-to-Hand, Athletics, Unarmored and Acrobatics are increased to 100 or 150 and everything else decreased to 1.
Additionaly you run really fast and jump very high.
As for downsides, they are similar to those from Skyrim. You can't interact with enything, you can't use magic, your inventory is inaccessible. Silver weapon really HURTS!
Additionaly, you transform every night and every night you have to kill an NPC, but that's not a problem. You'll see why.
But the most important thing is... you're going to visit Solstheim and MQ from Bloodmoon is brilliant!
