Description This is an oil painting that I did of some lemons. The painting was done in one sitting using a number 12 flat brush. I set this requirement, using a single medium sized brush, when I started the painting because I wanted the painting to look very loose, but still realistic. I have a tendancy to reach for my small brushes a lot and focus too much on details. I'm trying to wean myself off the small brushes because I'm beginning to love a simplistic style that is still realistic. If I knew how to use it, I'd love to try a painting using only a palette knife. I've seen wonderful impressionistic work in this style. This painting was done from life which is pretty new to me. Usually I work from photos but it was nice to have the freedom of working from life.

My hand is still in the splint but I still have 4 fingers, lol. Thank you to everyone for the concerned e-mails. I intend on getting back to everyone but it will take some time since I'm crippled at the moment and I have lots of e-mails to respond to. But I do appreciate all the concerns and well wishes. To everyone that donated for my medical bills, I will be sending out responses too. I recieved a lot of checks through the mail along with some really nice letters.

Thank you for following my work!

nice to see you working from life here .. oils are hard and take practice for sure - intrigued by the pallet knife comment cuz while in college i had the tendancy to want to overblend alot of the time and its easy to lose control with oils really fast - my teacher took my brushes away and told me to just use a knife and rag and i freakin loved it! - give it a shot

heres a friend of mine that you should take a gander at too .. [link] - he does alot of small 4x6 and 5x7 "daily studies" and most of them are simple subjects like this ... he paints so damn much it makes me feel lazy as hell but they are unbelievable for alla prima works - proof that practice like this pays off .. even if you are missing a digit or two!

Nicely done. I think the fast ones are always best, I love to do them.

Great piece, you have really captured the simple freshness of a lemon if that makes sense
