This is awesome! (The 1977 Hobbit was a landmark of my childhood... I have an extreme fondness for it and all its oddities, even though no one wears pants....) How did you get the texture on the beard to come through so solidly? I haven't dabbled in Blender for a good long time, but I always wanted to do character sculpts. Anything I attempted came away looking terrifying. So I envy your beard.Β

Blender's hair & fur system have certainly come a long way! For this one, I actually made separate geometry to emit the beard whiskers and did some fine adjustments to shape the hair and adjust the length near the upper lip and sides of the face. Glad to see a fellow fan of the Rankin/Bass film. Though maybe not 100% authentic to Tolkien's vision, it certainly had a unique aesthetic and very strong voice acting.

That is awesome. I shall definitely have to fiddle with the new Blender. I don't think I've touched it since 2.6..... I shall also have to devote some time toward actually learning how to sculpt in the darn thing. Or sculpt at all.
That film sure had a personality all its own. I watched it again before going to see the first Hobbit movie, and I was deeply saddened that Peter Jackson couldn't find a place for "The greeeeatest adventuure is what liiiiies ahead....."

Thanks! It's my first ever character sculpt. I'll have to do another one of these days.
