HDRI stands for High Dynamic Range Image.
They're applied as environments and used in lighting to create ultra-realistic reflections.

There are tutorials all over the net that you can pick up the basics from, or I'd be more than happy to walk you through at least the basics. I'm using 3ds max 7, but i'm also somewhat familiar with maya, and the concepts should be universal.

that would be awesome but the problem with that is i dont have the program i need to work on 3D sorry.
