The instant I saw this I thought railgun. Even before I saw the title, not to mention the preview image is really small so good job. You really got your theme across.

It would be interesting if you could make something as accessible as a coin a weapon.

very nice! i never did get the physics of that though. how she held it wasnt really how a railgun worked. but i digress as that show was epic.

I figured that since she tends to toss the coin up that she applied the mag-fields for the railgun effect right when it reached her hand. She wouldn't be holding it at that point.

true, but that would make it not a railgun. a railgun's projectile has to be a diamagnet (a metal thats repelled bu both negative and positive.). from the looks of your drawing, it appears as though, after magnetizing the coin, a magnetic force is applied by the thumb to propel it forward, and a force on the index finger to stabilize it.

You know, that is the EXACT thing I was perplexed about. In the anime misaka flicks the coin and the coin flies off at mach speed. But a railgun works (basically) by a piece of conductive metal slapped between two poles with electricity running through them. For the so called hand railgun to work, misaka would need to stick the coin between her fingers (like so b, then run the charges through her two fingers that the coin is stuck between. But since misaka is able to produce electricity from her body, and lets say it would be possible, the force produce from firing the railgun would rip her fingers apart, as the human hand which is made from flesh and bone is highly unlikely to withstand the force.

But then again, there is the saying "Don't bring IRL phyics into anime"

"But then again, there is the saying "Don't bring IRL phyics into anime'"

lol ya. i tend to do that with everything.

Theory 1:
She's only nicknamed 'Railgun' and that is the name she has given to her finishing move involving the coin. Perhaps what she does ISN'T a railgun, merely that it produces an effect similar to a railgun, and hense the name.

Theory 2:
If it were an actual railgun effect, she is able to manipulate magnetic fields and electric currents outside of her body, so she could replicate the exact science of railgun physics by generating the poles at points outside of her body.

Theory 3:
Their ability manifests by the esper superimposing their own 'personal reality' over the actualy reality. If in Misaka's personal reality, the laws of physics are not the same, this could allow for said effect.

Regardless I like it

you made some good, oddly valid points... all three seem to work well.

Theory 3, from what I understand, is canon. Espers project a "personal reality" that adjusts the laws of physics around them. The level system is a measure of how effective the replacement is. (This makes Touma very interesting. He's an esper whose personal reality is one that excludes supernatural powers.)

Theory 2 is correct as far as I'm concerned. Since Mikoto can freely create and control electricity (this is the extent of her personal reality,) utilizing existing laws of physics she can also indirectly create and control magnetic fields. This is the basis of her ironsand attacks.

Theory 1 is weird. Any other method I can think of either involves adding telekinesis to her powers, or the use of a EM burst large enough to fry minds.

So, railguns work because you have a conductive piece of metal between two rods set up the have a current running through them (in one, across the gap to the other and out.) The coin is conductive. Mikoto pushes current out on one side of her arm, but restricts it's path to roughly that of one provided by one rod. The current gets to the coin, which allows it to jump across to a similar path on the other side, where she draws the current back in. Physics handles the rest. She basically imagines a railgun into existence.

REA002 In reply to eYoungren [2010-04-11 11:47:37 +0000 UTC]

"The coin is conductive"

not exactly. what makes a projectile fire out of a railgun is the fact that its a diamagnet . this phenomena literally forces the projectile out of the barrel because its trying to repel the rails. this is why you would need a pneumatic system behind the railgun to give the projectile a kick start.

other than that, everything you said makes sense.

I appreciate your use of the word 'oddly'. Somehow it makes the between-the-lines say, "You don't often see explainations that are viable." Which makes me feel good about myself. So for that, I thank you! Lol XD

i also like the way you think; abstract and logically illogical (where something sounds so illogical, yet its logical). that way of thinking could land you a job as a quantum physicist.

Lol, you get me! I love all things logic Quantum Physics would definitely be interesting, but I just don't have the passion for it that I do Game Development... Thanks for the compliment, yet again!
