So I did another thing for another of my best friends, James - who is also considered family at this point. I'm really very happy with how this one came out.EDIT: Featured in a drawfriend on EQD again?? Whaaaa! *explodes* Thanks so much whoever is submitting these!
EDIT PART TWO: I uploaded a high-res version by request (sort of). Download for the full thing to be used as a wallpaper if you so desire.

Ohhhhhhh I was supposed to do a tutorial about it but I never got around to it.
In all honesty, all I did was play around with the brushes and their modes (darken, multiply, color burn) with different opacity levels in a lot of circular motions. I used a "star" shaped brush as various opacity levels and sizes for the stars.
All I'd really suggest is play around with the modes and stuff for a while and you'll get a feel for it. It only took me an hour or two to get these results and I'm far from a Photoshop wizard.

The great detail, a smooth style, and the slightly minimalistic approach make it perfect for a desktop image. It isn't so busy and distracting that I have problems finding things in the workspace. When I want to take a few minutes for a break the dark colors and flowing lines are actually very calming and meditative.
You should try something similar with Celestia and the Mane 6. You'd have to mix the poses up a little to keep things from being *too* monotonous, but the different color schemes would make for a nice touch. You could even try Big Mac, Shining Armor, Cadance, and a few of the other more prominent background ponies, but I think they might prove much more difficult.
On a different note, I do have to admit that it's a little small for my native 2880 x 1800 display (if you could provide a version rendered at that level, it would be awesome, by the by), but your work on this piece is absolutely fantastic. Keep up the good work!
