Don'tΒ think Mako will ever be able to lavabend, even in conjunction with an earthbender, but favourited because of the composition and colours!

Firebending is partly the manipulation of heat. So it's not impossible for Mako to bend some parts of the lava.

Seeing as Toph and Katara bent mud with no problems, I don't necessarily think they'd have to work *together* to bend it.
But, groups of benders often did things in sync, so it would still fit.
