"This wasn't meant to last."

   The way Kulinda spoke those words made Mjukuu's heart shatter. Why had she become so cold?
Was it something he did, or was it because she now preferred Tumaini? No, Mjukuu thought,
Kulinda preferred me over him. Maybe the red maned lion had something to do with this.

  "I know you don't really mean that!" Mjukuu exclaimed, trying to hold back his tears as well as his
claws. He waited for Kulinda to confess her love, but the maned lioness only looked down from
his sorrowful stare. "Look, Kulinda." he continued more soothingly, "We can run away together-
start a new life together."

  "We can't!" Kulinda snapped, her narrowed eyes gleamed like chips of diamond in the darkness of
night. "Because...I never did and never will love you the way I love him!" She included with a hint of
uncertainty.

  Mjukuu blinked as he stood still as a rock. This wasn't true, it couldn't be. The two lions gazed into
one another for what felt like seasons. "You don't really mean that." Mjukuu finally repeated more
harshly, his extended claws now sunken into the earth.

  "I-I'm sorry." Kulinda mumbled, her ice-blue eyes now more sympathetic. "I have to go." She said
more firmly. With that the beautiful lioness turned away from Mjukuu to go be with Tumaini.

  But before Kulinda could take another paw step forward Mjukuu had darted up in front of her with
bared teeth. The heartbroken lion won't let her slip away that easily.

  "You aren't going anywhere near him, you belong with me!" Mjukuu snarled. He had to do
something to get Kulinda away from that piece of hyena-dung, even if it meant he had to hurt her.

  Realizing how desperate he was for her lust, Mjukuu thrusted himself against Kulinda, unaware of
her nasty glare. "I know you still want my warmth." Mjukuu purred lecherously in Kulinda's ear, the
fury in his amber eyes had gone. "Don't be afraid to love me."

  "Enough of this, Mjukuu!" Kulinda roared as she pulled away from his affection and into pounce
position. "Listen, you have every right to feel hurt, but you must understand that what we had is
gone." Still cautious Kulinda added more calmly, "Let me go. You must move on."

  Mjukuu froze in bewilderment. What she had said reminded him of a lioness who he once cared
for dearly, but he was convinced that he had moved on from her passing to love Kulinda.

  But that moment of remembrance quickly evaporated as he watched Kulinda move further away
from him. This is a nightmare, this couldn't be happening! Mjukuu wanted to claw himself to see if
he was dreaming, but all of this felt too real.

This wasn't meant to last.

  The same words kept rushing through his head. For a few heartbeats he agreed with Kulinda. The
lioness had built a life with Tumaini in the Greatlands, she couldn't just leave it all behind.

  But he couldn't pretend that his relationship between Kulinda never happened, not when she
meant so much to him. "No, this was meant to last." Mjukuu growled to himself as he looked up to
the kings of the past.
