Description
Reality is a point of view
One that's totally depends on you
It's not what you see
It's what you choose not to see

Paint yourself a better picture
One of mountains and sky
It's not what you see,
It's how you see it

Take control of your perception
One that will make this a better world
It's not just in order to see
It's to see what it will do, for you

****

I thought of this just after I made Smoke The Sky .
It's based on the same idea. Giving a spin on reality to create the illusion of a better one.
I got up to a high place at the army base I was in (You can see some of it on the bottom of the frame) and started experimenting with the technique.

It's not easy since the focal length of the background and the pen is very different. I had to also build the composition in a way the hand fits into the frame naturally, like a painter hand will fit over a canvas. But the hardest part was pointing the pen at the right position to complete the composition and blend the reality with the illusion. Since of the focal length the background is blurred in the viewfinder (though sharp at the end caused of the closed aperture) so it's hard to place it right.

Well, this is the idea, and the exaction.
I hope you like it, and even more, feel it.
Yours, G

This is a great concept and I can appreciate the level of difficulty in creating it. At first I didn't think I agreed with how color was working in this image but I played with it in photoshop for a while and it looks worse in greyscale. So kudos to you, this is a difficult image that gets the job done.

I like the concept.
But I think the perspective on the arm is a bit off.

interesting....but how do you get such good focus on both close up and the distant mountains?

Excellent result. I think what impresses me most is the fact that you were able to hold the pen that still without any evidence of movement during the 1/8" exposure. You either have great luck or great coordination!

Fan-bloody-tastic.

Love the premise and the poetic introduction.

So which part are you focusing on?

How cool is this! Not only does it have a quality of optical illusion but also ambiguity. For example, in the smaller version it looked the the edge of a cliff that over looked a city. And in the bigger version you can see the pencils edge line up to the cliff. I could see a whole coffee book table on these kind of images. I would definately buy one. (can I have an autograph with mine? )

Yeah I heard a Hezbelloh woman on the news saying that it didn't matter that their homes were all ashes and rubble and that they didn't see the war as a loss - because they knew they had won the war and it felt like a new begginning for them.

It really felt like they weren't in touch with the actions that were taking place around them. Also there was a family watching a terrorists training video of their son who had just killed himself and others in a carbomb attack. And as they sat their rocking back and forth the grandmother of the man was recorded as saying, "We sure are proud of him".

Well, maybe they are proud of him.

Hard to understand that mentality. Based on the desire to hate and kill at all cost.
I know I've seen and felt it, and still find it hard to believe

I think it is an interesting idea and well composed. Even if it wouldn't be as reflective as the pen I think a paint artists brush might do better considering it is aimed at something pretty soft. You wouldn't be able to paint something that soft with a normal pen. Anyway where would one be able to get hands on a painters brush in a military camp?

I've looked at your gallery now, and I have some stuff to say(and I chose this pic as the stage): Your shots create a world of emotions imo. I don't know always what are you trying to achieve, what emotion are you trying to move, but in almost every picture I have seen you manage to move something.

Let it be a picture of a monkey, hanging in it's cage, or two lovers on the beach, you manage to create interest in the obvious, the everyday stuff we all see and feel.

Pictures like "the sweet side of the army", showing humanity in Israel's army(which I know from a very close angle(I'm still serving)), or "Silent Prayer" in which such a lonley view is handled to the viewer, a wonderful shot, which I never thought could be from Israel.

All of these reasons, made me want to watch you(and I will), but all of these reasons also made me wonder a bit about this picture.

I really admire the way that you create your ideas, and I can feel the difficulties in producing such a picture, but I just don't like it so much. It seems a bit forced imo, and the pen is not in such a good angle as well.

All said, I do like your work, thus the watch.
Peace.

The thing that was in depth to me was the story in bold though. I've read of the brains power and perception view. There are as many views on and of life as there are people. You make your own world, and you can choose how to see or not see things. It's complicated what I'm trying to say, but I'm sure you get what I mean because of what you wrote.

myparamedic [2006-08-27 05:23:25 +0000 UTC]

I'm definately not one to critique your work negatively wise, but I dunno. I didn't find much depth behind the background and photo like your others. I'd much have rather seen you with a paintbrush painting the sky instead. I guess it's not original to me because I've done this sort of photo before too.

Sorry for the critique.

It's hard to critique one of the masters at , and don't get me wrong, I really like the idea you were trying to capture here. This composition, though, might have been better suited to be done as a true manip... (for the reasons you described, it's very hard to compose in F2.0 for a shot that will be done at F20). I think a brush would have worked better than a pen as well.
