Description I've taken this shot inside "The Church of the Holy Sepulcher" in Jerusalem.

I came to watch, and hopefuly take some pictures in the parade that takes place there, each year on Pascha.
An awe-inspiring event takes place in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. At noon of the Holy Saturday, the Patriarch of Jerusalem with his escort - archpriests, priests and deacons and the Armenian Patriarch enter the Holy Sepulchre. After finishing prayers, a miraculous light appears--the Patriarch of Jerusalem lights two candles from it, then exits the sepulchre and lights the candles of the non-Chalcedonian patriarchs outside. Others' candles light spontaneously. For the first several minutes from the fire's appearance, it does not burn to the touch and many pilgrims immerse their faces and hands in the flame without being harmed.

What you see is a painting drawn of the roof of the church from inside. I took it around 14:00, and I noticed the way the light was bursting out of the window, like falling and lighting the painting.
It was amazing to see, and I just kept hoping I will be able to capture this right.

The Holy Sepulcher or the Sacred Tomb, is a church in Jerusalem, officially the Church of the Resurrection. It is in the east central part of the Christian quarter, on the supposed site of Jesus' tomb. Steps connect it with chapels of St. Helena and of the Finding of the True Cross.

The center of the church is Romanesque, the shrine itself being at the west end of the nave in a great rotunda; the entrance of the church is from the south. The fabric built by the Crusaders is preserved, somewhat disguised, in the present building.

The church has been much quarreled over by various Christian groups. The Orthodox Eastern Church secured control of most of it from the Turks, but there are partitioned areas for the use of Roman Catholics (in the custody of the Franciscans), the Copts, the Syrian Jacobites, and the Gregorian Armenians.

In Arabic the church is called Al-Qeyamah, which means the Resurrection. It is no doubt the most important shrine in the Christian world. On the grounds of the Holy Sepulcher it is believed that Jesus Christ (pbuh) was crucified, buried and rose from the dead.

On that note, Happy Easter again

Great picture. I love how the light enters.

I've heard about that yearly miracle. So you saw it?

There's things I can say about the finding of the real cross and saint Helena, but I'm not sure if this is the place and if you'd like it.

So I just want to tell you that this is a great work.
Thank you

when i think of Jerusalem (or Israel for that matter) i never expect to see a Christian church hehe. One of the stereotypes i guess i uphold never having actually been there. I really would like to visit one day!

you're very lucky , there's must be lots of nice monuments in Jerusalem, this city has so much history and varied cultures.. must be a really awesome spot for photography .
What I like in your work is tht you provide a very different view of Israel, and it makes me dream >. I think you have something special tht enables you to capture what's invisible for the most common of the eyes

G your "(pbuh)" comment doesn't really make sence, why would you mock Crist like that, and then say happy easter.... or did i miss something...

ok, not mocking, i just don't get what the pbuh was for, didn't mean for the last comment to come off with an angry connotation to it

Ah, question answered... (I asked on the other shot if this was an Orthodox church, as I recognize many elements...

The architecture and artwork of the old church's is simply amazing. Modern churches here in America have more the look of a stale auditorium at best; certainly no attention to detail like this one.

On an amusing historical note, the site for the church of the Holy Sepulchre, as well as several others of the holy places in Israel were reported to have been selected by the first Christian Emporer's (Constantine) wife. While touring the Holy Land, she had visions, "this is the place where the shepherd's stall was located where Jesus' was born" (church of the Nativity), etc.

Was she right? Were these the "correct" locations for the occurences of these holy events? Does it matter?

gilad In reply to Tkrain [2006-04-27 09:24:48 +0000 UTC]

I guess it doesn't matter if she was right, as long as ther are the correct locations

Tkrain In reply to gilad [2006-04-27 10:17:18 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, to me, it doesn't matter if the various Holy sights are really where they are celebrated today. The sights serve to remind us of God's interaction with man.

So often, I see pathetic attempts by "scholars" to dissassemble the Pentateuch, (claiming that it could not have been written by Moses, inventing fantasy "source documents" that don't exist), or to claim that Jerusalem never existed until centuries after the decree to restore the city (which is odd... why exactly, that Darius would decree a city to be rebuilt that didn't exist). What I've always found fascinating is, the deeper archaeologists dig, the more the Biblical stories (both OT and NT) are shown to have historical basis. The scholars that claim that a book like Isaiah could not possibly be accurately transmitted through the centuries have no explaination for the copy found in the Dead Sea scrolls that varies only in a few points of spelling...

So.. does it matter? To silence those who would deny God, absolutely, it matters. To those who have a relationship with God, an exact GPS location of the spot Jesus was buried or crucified is irrellevent.

One thing, btw, that I strongly admire about your work is that you have no difficulty photographing and documenting symbols of religions and cultures that do not agree with your own. While I am a strongly committed Christian, I believe the preservation of the historic places of all religions is vital to our future. (some would see this as a weakness of faith, I see it as a strength of faith!)

I really like the photo, but it seems to be lacking something, but I have no clue what it is lacking, or maybe it’s me that is lacking going all spiritual here. Anyway, the composition is awesome with the slight use of rule of thirds… how the top of the image has the windows move toward the left than centered, and then Jesus is centered, which is smart. The light streaming out takes on that very prevailing mood and makes it really nice to look at.

One of the best shots in a church I've ever seen Some days ago I read about this wonder, but I have only seen 4 of 5 photos about it...now I see another one, 10x to gilad (one of the best around here ). That's a great miracle and it should make the un-believers to think again. GOD bless you people ! Have a nice Easter !

Nice shot. These Byzantine depictions of Jesus make him look so grumpy! hahaha. Impressive mosaic work though. Its a pity everyone fights over religion though. That rather ruins religion for me. Especially since Jesus' primary command was to love one another.
