Frank Frazetta is another artist who played with varnish before he understood it - to his (and our) dismay. Looked real purdy until it developed those comminuted fractures all over.

Well, the strange thing is that Parrish knew better! He was a consummate technician, at one point mixing all of his own pigments and solutions. He photographed all of his own reference, built all his own props and frames! He had an extensive tool and production shop as an annex to his studio. The problem was, because of his volume of work due to his extreme popularity, he didn't always allow proper drying time between coats of varnish and the next lay of glaze!
One of the best books to date on his techniques was written by Coy L. Ludwig (originally published in the late '70's). I'm a huge Maxfield Parish fan, and to this day, still approach oils under his influence (sans the crazy varnish between every layer of glaze!).

I like his work and, well, that is strange. In Frank's case, however, I have it on good authority (his wife) that he did not know better.
(BTW-before they moved to Florida, the Frazetta's lived only a few miles from me. The "Museum" is in Marshall's Creek, which is a stone's throw from Mt. Effort. Yes. I live in a place called Mt. Effort - a name that is pregnant with meaning for me.)
Thanks for the reference. I'm years away from going there, but one never knows.

so that explains why some people like using violet. you can't produce violet by mixing colors anyway

Thank you very much for explaining in such detail this step of the project!
You really cleared most of my doubts on underpanting and on laying watercolours on an inked drawing.

I need to bring a sketchpad with me then... Next week I'll go to Japan for a business trip, and the jurney on a plane is excruciantingly looooong... Maybe my muse will come and keep me some company.
