There's something to be said about running around the woods with a paper mache raven's head strapped on your shoulders.

    Just plain ol' summertime fun.

I thought of saying something profound that would capture the essence of this piece, but a few other people did that already, so I'll just say;

I enjoyed looking at this one several times, finding something else I liked about it each time I did
Excellent!

Thanks, Ellen. Once and I while I like to try and combine different techniques and such. Sometimes they work out, and other times, well...not so well, lol. Thank you for the fave on this one, also!

"Odd?" "Etheral?" Don't tell me you have never run around the woods with a paper mache raven's head on your shoulders? Doc! Where have you been?! Obviously, missing out on the grander things in life...

Well, it wasn't paper mache, and it wasn't a raven....

Thanks, Rakesh, for the comments and the fave! This was a fun piece to do, with the stylized background against the detail of the tree and subject!

That looks like so much fun! Great work on the detail, and as others have said, I love the negative space caused by the trees in the background!

giadrosich In reply to gowsk [2008-06-20 19:24:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Gowsk! To break the foreground out, I wanted to go with a little more of an abstraction in the background, while still keeping the forest intact. On overlay, I tried out a few different techniques, but the graphic approach seemed to work the best and get the look that I wanted. All in all, this is one of the experimental mixes that worked, lol! I've tried so many in the past that haven't.

giadrosich In reply to ThirdPotato [2008-06-11 03:45:49 +0000 UTC]

This year, Dragon-Con will probably be the only show I get to go to. I've had to really cut back and reasses some things. Since I'm local, DC doesn't cost a whole lot to do, as I don't have to get a hotel room or any thing associated with out of town shows!

Thanks for the encouragement on the tree book. I'd love to do it, but I don't know it it would be commercially viable, but that has never seemed to stop me before, lol!

Haha sounds awesome! I might make it out to dragon con, I might not. But if I do, it'd be an honor to meet you. Do you ever do self publishing through LuLu.com?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

giadrosich In reply to ThirdPotato [2008-07-14 17:58:06 +0000 UTC]

I've considered it. I've checked out LuLu and some other sites, because mainly I don't have the time to package and ship stuff as of late. One site I've looked at is Estay for shirts and merchandising, but I'm a little put off by the high base prices that they charge on that kind of stuff. For the artist to make any real money, one has to charge an arm and a leg, and that drives the price up to expensive.

I've always tried to keep things inexpensive so that anyone could afford my work. More research is needed, I think!

ThirdPotato In reply to giadrosich [2008-07-14 19:27:02 +0000 UTC]

n.n That's an awesome way to look at it. Ja, I agree about having to charge an arm and a leg. I'm sure you'll find something that suits you best. Alls I know is that Lulu's pretty good, as far as tshirts and things, I'm afraid I don't know of a very good one to go to. Maybe Zazzle or something?

Elements arranged and composed with so much grace and rhythm that you don't even realize how many there are until you start to look more closely; fantastic work.

giadrosich In reply to SRaffa [2008-06-11 06:42:49 +0000 UTC]

Thank you kindly! It was a lot of fun working this one out so that the background didn't clash with the detail of the tree and subject. Going with the stylization helped to mininalize (or supress, at least) the forest while keeping all the other elements in focus.

Thanks so much for the fave, Sam!

Hope your new life is treating you proper, brother...

Good summertime fun indeed!

The trees in the background are wonderful! I love how suggestively abstract they are.

And the tree roots make me want to curl up and sleep in them.

Gorgeous work. It makes me excited to go hiking.
