Ink for the line work and Prisma-color pencil. Highlights provided with watercolor, this piece has been sitting around a week while I thought of a name. During that time, I went out and bought some larger, heavier paper. Really good stuff!

Without sounding too strange, I consider this a practice piece, setting the stage for my next finished image. Thanks for looking, as always!

Oh my God... you make art like momma does. I can draw the lines and put the colors there, but it just doesn't come out like this...
I hope you live to a 120 and more and keep making art every day.

Wow! Thanks, Aaron. 120, huh? That would be okay, as long as I only look 90!

Thanks! I love the "spontaneity with an underlying coherence!" Sometimes, in the middle of the 6th or 10th layer of color pencil, one wonders where the "moment" has gone! It indeed doesn't seem very spontaneous at the time, unlike water color or oils! Too many years with ink...

But, that approach may change!

The relationship between raw and refined is always interesting to me-- I never discount either approach...

Do I really have to write anything? Ok, but don't tell me I didn't warn ya! So... splendid coloring! Background looks very cool, building/temple - as it was a real Japan building and women in awesome kimono (or should I write goddess?) - fantastic! Great job, Bob! ^^

Thanks! Sorry for the belated reply, but for some reason I missed this comment (blame it on those crazy "stack" that DA does now! ). Anyway, rendering clothing has always been one of my great loves whenever I do a character drawing. I really get inspired by the way the clothing moves in anime shows! I just wished it all looked that cool in real life.

I think you did a wonderful job portraying the folds in her clothing. I like the color choices and composition. I have been meaning to do more work with a watercolor/pencil mixture, now I have some inspiration to try it. Hopefullly it will turn out as nice as this piece! Beautiful Work!!!!!!

Thanks, Sandi! Glad I could be an inspiration of sorts! That is one thing I love about DA; when I need reminding of some medium I haven't tried in a while, or a fresh approach in an untried medium, I can just browse around and find plenty of cool works to look at!!

Now...break out those pencils!!

I know what you mean about dA, where I live there aren't alot of artists around that I could get together with and talk art, so it's nice to be able to chat with people here. I am a working mom so I don't put art first right now, but, I have been trying to find more time to paint because dA makes me see that I shouldn't waste what extra time I do have. Thanks...

Awww, thanks, Leslie! It was a lot of fun to finally do a finished piece, and I truly hope the next one will be better. More focused, as it were. That being said, I think it will also be more monochromatic. There will be color, but mostly on the cool side of the pallet.

Thanks so much for the fave!

Excellent Work Master Bob!
I don't know if you read many Graphic Novels, but see if you can get your hands on Storm Riders. It was created in China, and I think if you found an actual Chinese edition it'd be a visual treat for you.

wow, even better than I imagined it would be! That background is beautifully detailed without overwhelming the figure. I look forward to the next piece!

giadrosich In reply to vasnefy [2010-08-30 03:25:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Christine! When I decided on the background, fairly late in the game, I might add, I was a little worried that it would, indeed, conflict with the figure, so I tried hard to tone it down a bit so that it would compliment the building and figure. The hard part (for me) was to figure out a way to incorporate some of the same color scheme into both while trying to keep them separate.

The pencil on the next piece will be completed soon! Thanks for stopping by.

giadrosich In reply to Steelpengu [2010-08-30 03:21:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Bo (for the fave, also!). I was getting worried, too! Lots of sketching but no finished work. Moving kinda has that affect, and with two long distance moves in as many years, my studio went from very expansive to, well...non-existent. So, I'm finding out what can be done once again on a coffee table and a couch with really crappy lighting, lol. Oh, and no editing software to speak of.

Fun, fun, fun! Next piece coming up in a little while. And yep, China has been a blast thus far! Lots to see and eat!

Prismacolor is made of WIN. Lovely work, even if you consider it practice. Your shading on the white cloth is particularly nice, and the mottling in the firey star-fluff in the background is just cool.

giadrosich In reply to rachaelm5 [2010-08-30 03:14:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for looking, Rachael! I love working with (and looking at) Prismacolor, and now that I'm deprived of my dyes (although I've been eyeing a set here at a local stationary store!), it gives me a chance to work with them once again on a regular basis.

I also just bought some heavier paper for the next piece, which will help with some of the plans to do some water color washes first as a base to apply the pencils to!

rachaelm5 In reply to giadrosich [2010-08-30 03:55:10 +0000 UTC]

Those watercolor washes as underpaintings really do a wonderful job of defining (or defying) a color scheme. Love the technique in combination with the Prismas. I'll be watching to see what you do with it.

Excellent! A triumphant return to the fold, Bob! Lovely details and colors! It makes me miss doing a big, detailed personal piece, as I've been working on comics the last few months.

Thanks, Scott! I was glad to finish anything, lol! It has been a while since I started something, although I've been doing a lot of sketching and such to keep the skills from getting rusty. Keep working on the comic! Deadlines are a great way to get quicker, in that they force us to work within a certain time frame.

Thanks for the fave on this one!

Awww...thank you! I just wish my camera had taken a better photo. I tried a bunch of times last week, and finally got some additional lighting on it this evening to try and bring out some contrast and color. The next piece will be bigger and more monochromatic, but lots and lots of detail, lol!

Ahh new artwork sounds wonderful!!
I remember well not having a scanner and uploaded images and wincing a lot! In the end I would take my artwork outside lie in on the ground and take a photo. The downside was sometimes colors washed out but details were sharper.
