I almost want to say that the character that became Neltharion kinda originated from Rubeus. The Black Dragon of Lunar.

He's such a fuzzy-wuzzy, but unlike Nel, he's not exactly snuggly. He's handsome, but he's not exactly snuggly. He's the straight man of the Four Dragons. And very serious.

He looks a bit..ah...zoned out. If he and Nel ever meet up, Nel should bring his hookah out again then.

Refreshing, to mellow out. People, and dragons, need that every once in a while. Love the look in his eyes. I can't describe it, really, but it is intriguing. Thanks for sharing!

How you like him? Rubeus is well, my other buddy besides Nel.

He's pretty badass. I like that rough edge to him, that Nel makes up for in squishiness, if that makes sense at all. Also, Rubeus has that look of, "I know better than you, so don't even try" where Nel squishes your bones as he tells you. Rubeus just seems to wear it on the exterior more.

I'd like to say that Rubeus was the prototype that became the squishy Neltharion. It's just that with Rubeus and the planet he was on, there really wasn't much going on, not much along the lines of war between nations and rarely a bad, all-powerful being coming down to squash the heroes. Rubeus and the other dragons on his world really don't do much. With Nel and Azeroth, there was always something going on. There's the Old Gods, the Twilight Hammers, Garrosh, the war between the Alliance and the Horde, and whatever is going to happen in Pandaria. Neltharion always has something to do. Someone, somewhere always needs him to get up and have a presence.

Yeah, Rubeus actually wears his badassery on the exterior where as Neltharion it's more internal. I mean, granted, you see a 800 foot long, hugely muscular dragon wearing elementium armor, you're not gonna mess with him, but Neltharion has a different way of standing, I guess than Rubeus. Neltharion is softer and more approachable. He's more likely to see you walking up and wave and smile as kindly as he can. Rubeus is...he wouldn't want you to come even within reach of his claws, unless you want to be swiped at.

Rubeus is colder than Neltharion. And there is a good reason for that. It's not like he distrusts mortals, he's just had his heart broken by them a lot. And that expression you see is his hard determination. He wears nothing else.

His son Ebony is a little bit more like the casual, playful, and snarky Nel.

I don't think in all the images I've drawn of Rubeus, he's ever smiled once. That's the kind of character he is. I did tried to draw him with a smile and it looked all wrong. He's not the character that smiles. Nel smiles, Nel rolls his 40 thousand tonned ass over and tries to look cute and playful despite being the advanced age he is. (I think he did that a few times in the stories too.) Rubeus would never ever do that.

The problem I had in writing Rubeus was I could never find him something to do. So, I kinda transfered a little of what he is into Neltharion, at least Neltharion's serious side.

Interesting concept, and I can see bits of him in your Neltharion, for obvious reasons. I'm glad that you're able to incorporate even a little of him, since he doesn't have much going for him to write about at the moment. Still, that hard determination is certainly well done in your images; I couldn't imagine him smiling after your description here. Thank you for sharing.

I don't know what it is, but believe it or not, Rubeus was one of my favorites. Nel's being my new snuggly, but there is something about Rubeus. I want him to go out and do something. I'll find him something to do, someday. I just don't know what.

Though I would live to get into the story that talks about how Rubeus met his human wife and how she died and such. It is a bit of a sad story. Pretty much explains his character right there. Wrote the first draft as a literary exercise, so it means it's all character development instead of being plot driven. It's them traveling around and before she died, Rubeus was more friendly. Not as serious as he is now.

When you find the time to do his story, I believe it will be an amazing one. All of your writing is phenomenal, whether short story or long piece, and since Rubeus holds that special part of you, I am certain he will come to life as your other characters have.

A big, fur-covered dragon, smoking a cig? You haven't read Bone by any chance, have you?

Never even heard of it. Rubeus smoking is something I've been drawing since 2003

I was lucky, my middle school library had all nine volumes of Bone, even though they were probably intended for a bit of an older audience.

One of the characters in that series was a red dragon who was usually seen smoking a cigarette. He was covered in fur and was the most mammalian dragon I've ever seen. I think if you Google "bone great red dragon" you might see what I mean.

Still never heard of it. Yeah, I'm not a fan of the bunny ears or the human hands with that dragon design.

I think it's meant to be unconventional, because when the Great Red Dragon was introduced in Bone, it was still a primarily gag-based comic; Fone Bone didn't believe that the Dragon was what he said he was, and demanded proof, which the Dragon delivered in the way any dragon would. VROOMPH!

But Rubeus loves his smokes.
