Description "It ain't my fault! Its that Abe guy! First Rupture Farms, now Necrum Mines, there ain't no bones anywhere! No bones, no brew, I AM TOTALY SCREWED.!

Now this is a piece I've been taking a crack at for years now, and only now managed to make something worth while. Its one and only Director Phleg from the PSOne's Abe's Exoddus game, both Exoddus and Oddysee are easly among my top 3 games of all times and now as I've finally might get some time to take a crack at New'n Tasty it seemed fitting to try it one more time. Hope you'll like it.

When I saw the preview I wanted to cite 'It ain't my fault...', too

That's where the idea for this one came from. Those lines have been burned into my mind as a kid, I replayed these games countless times(well, in a way... I never managed to beat it back then... even when we combined forces with my dad we only got the bad ending).

Played Exoddus a lot when as a kid, too! Didn't have a PC version of the first game back then though. I found it much later out of nostalgia. It was much harder than Exoddus! As for the three glukkons, their interviews were all pure genius

We had our... not quite, 100% original copies back then. As a kid I wasn't even aware that those were pirated, to us that was just how you got games - Uncle's friend's brother's son borrowed it from some guy and it somehow ended up at your house. Original copies were just a different way of getting them, mostly for birthdays and christmas(and even then I remember getting a cracked FF8 for pc(somehow) for a Bday presentx)).

Honestly I didn't really notice a difficulty spike between the games, in both of them combined I got stuck only once. There was one command in Exoddus's gamespeak, can't quite remember wich one, that was only used once in the entire game, I completely forgot it even existed and couldn't save a group of Mudocans, before finally breaking and looking it up. Other than that I like that everything is logical and it makes it a really fun and unussual puzzle/lemming-like platformer.

And yeah, those cuscenes are all pure gold, every once in a while I go back and watch the Oddworld movie, or just particular scenes and to this day they make me laugh or give me goosebumps. The dark, yet fascinating atmosphere in those games is second to none.

I played 'this' kind of version, too. Some didn't even know there were 'original' discs back then. If a disc was sold it was considered as good as 'official'.

You're talking about 'stop it', I guess. It was in one of the later levels (Soulstorm brewery) where you had to stop mudokons from fighting.

Oddysee was harder because of the lack of quicksaves. If Exoddus didn't have savestates it would've been much harder than Oddysee. Also the way the checkpoints were placed in certain places in Oddysee was very frustrating. I still remember that place in Scrabania (in the beginning of the Temple) where you had to pass a rather hard secret area and then without a checkpoint traverse three screens with sligs in the background where it was only a matter of chance if you pass or get shot. Moreover, you had to diffuse a bomb on one of those screens with the sligs watching

Yeah I still remember the flea games market in the neighbouring city, copyright laws took their time in eastern/central Europe.

That's it, it was so annoing, and one of the very few flaws of that game. I guess they mayby planned more for that command, but ran out of developement time and just had to leave that odd one in.

I hear that a lot, but I think the checkpoints in Oddysee were quite reasonable, with few exceptions. I know wich one you are talking about, it definitelly was a bit of a trial and error but it wasn't the worst(I actually really like the bombs in those games, they have this really fun flow/beat to them). But there was that other secret... I can't remember it 100% but it was something like 4-5 screens of running and barerly managable jumps in a row(each different), with some kind of puzzle at the end and then the way back all without a checkpoint of course, oh and there was a Scrab or two involved. That's the only part of the game I swore at, that one was a real pain, but the stubborn bastard I am I somehow made it tho it took something between 15-25 attempts.

Exoddus was developed in about 9 months. The publisher demanded it, I think. Wonder that they managed to get it done as they did.

The place you're talking about seems to be the one in the beginning. It's after the factory, in the scrab cages before the night area. You had to run back and forth from a scrab several times in a row. The 'fun' thing was that if you made a jump slightly wrong and hanged on a ledge you had almost no chances to climb out. It was pretty hard, but I'd say it wasn't as bad as the one in the beginning of Scrab Temple.

Speaking of bootleg copies, I wasn't able to finish Exoddus at all when I played it for the first time. I had a poorly translated copy with alot of bugs. The music didn't work properly and it crashed sometimes but the reason I wasn't able to beat it was different. Due to awkward translation I had no clue that Abe could duck and roll while running. So I got stuck in a final area of Bonewerkz where you had to run from slogs. Since there was no Internet to look it up I just moved on. It was years later when I got back to these games out of nostalgia, got legal copies and finished them properly.

To be fair the first game was so good all they had to do was add few things, fix some issues and build new levels and even then it was an awesome sequel. Mayby now with Soulstrom they'll get a chance to make the exoduss game they always wanted, on their Instagram they are digging out a metric ton of old rejected/wip concept art, if a tenth of that gets into the game it will be huge.

Yes, taht's the one, I guess everyone is better at diferent things so they find certain areas more chalenging. One thing that surprised me is that back in the day I had nightmares about flying Sligs, but when I replayed the game years later they weren't even remotely dangerous.

I'm pretty sure everyone who was a gamer back then has a bunch of horror stories about their quasi legal copies. For example the FF8 I got for birthday worked perfectly... until the dinosaur area and then it just crashed, I only got past that point once I bought it trought PS Store on my PS3. Anotehr example was FF7 that I played on an emulator on our pc, somehow that game managed to brick the entire machine, worst thing was my dad kept all of his restaurant's documents on it, invouces and such and all of that went down to, luckly he was the one that got us that game so I didn't get in trouble.

One of the worst cases I had was 'X-wing Alliance'. This was a Star Wars space simulator released sometime around 2000-2001. It was a two disc game but for some reason it was completely impossible to find a decent copy. All available copies were stripped one CD versions. Likely that was because of the game being unpopular on our market for one reason - it was joystick-only and comparatively small amount of people had them. Also I found out about this game a bit after it was initially released and it was quite hard to find any copy at all. I was a big fan of Star Wars back then and wanted to play this game a lot. Had to borrow the joystick from my cousin to play it. You can imagine how disappointed I was to find out that it was extremely glitchy and freezed in the third mission.

By the way, years later I got a normal copy and it turned out this game was ridiculously hard in certain spots. There were several particular missions where you had to defend allied spacecraft from waves of incoming enemies. These were utter frustration.

On the other hand, there were some pretty well-done 'quasi-legal' localizations back then. One such game for me was Half-Life. There isn't much dialogue in it but it was done in a humorous, slightly crude way. Another was Drakan. I had a copy with really good voice-acting. And the game itself was awesome.

I never played any of the space fighters when it comes to SW, but I remember a pod racing game. I'm pretty sure its the one that recently came out on GOG - STAR WARS Episode I: Racer that thing was quite awesome back in the day, tho I've yet to revisit it so it might be just nostalgia talking. I actually had a generally good expierience with those copies, I'd say mayby about 10% of them had some issues and those were ones that just flat out refused to boot at all, we still have a box of them in our basement and I'm pretty sure most of them would run with very little issue even now.

Mayby its just because I'm polish, we are pretty skilled when it comes to "homebrew" solutions to problems and especially since the copyright law took its sweet time to come to our lands there was a lot of time to perfect the craft. From what I remember console game had more issues, but I grew up with a pc so I didn't have much hands on expierience there. As for localizations, the official ones were, for the most part, so bad that you would be hard pressed to tell them apart from fan onesx), 3 games that really stood out were Planescape: Torment, Gothic (both of wich were as good if not better than the originals) and Warcraft 3 (wich was really solid tho not quite as amazing as the english).

Yes, the Racer game was quite awesome! I remember I was really excited about it because I liked the podracing scene from Ep. I. It had a drawback though. If I remember correctly, there were just about handful of levels that were hard (because of tricky obstacles) and the others were not really challenging at all because the bots were too slow for some reason. If you took lead you could just go on and on until the finish without any competition. The only two levels that were really hard were a level in a space colony where you could crash into asteroids and a level on a gas giant where you had to drive on a narrow pathway in the void.

As for the 'homebrewed copies' of those times, the quality generally depended upon a 'studio' that made them (sometimes on the games themselves, too). There were several such 'studios' that made (mostly) quality rips and translations and nobody outside the trade could even imagine they actually were pirates! For example I had a fully localized version of X-wing vs. TIE fighter that came with a small sourcebook that was printed on high-quality glossy cardboard-like paper with good design, all the controls, descriptions of the ships etc. That was an 'unofficial' copy, too Same goes with Gothic. I friend of mine had a similar 'almost official', fully localized edition of it.

The only thing I really remember that game for were the two alien guys I liked the look of, I'm not really into SW so I have no clue what they are called. For the gameplay, well being a >10 years old kid I had no real clue how good it was, it looked nice and I probably just wasn't good enough to realize how bad the bots were. I even remember bouncing of NWN 2 and Morrowind because I couldn't figure out what to do there, of they just seemed borring. Tho on the other hand now that I slowly get my hands on the old games I played back in the day I've yet to get burned by their quallity, like the Oddwolrd games, HoMM 1-4, Knights and Merchants etc. all turn out to be good so I guess my taste wasn't that bad.

Those half official copies you describe are head and shoulders above anything we could expect.x) It was basically a giant bazaar with hundreds(mayby thousands) of the cheapest cd boxes you could get, with a "meh" quallity reprint of the cover in them and you'd be lucky to find anything other than the disc inside and even that was of course just a bland cd/dvd with the game's name written on it. Admittedly official publishers started popping out relatively quickly and in good numbers so we got a lot of diferent "classic" or "extra" lines of re-releases, wich were relatively well priced and at that point we could start buying real copies, all it took was a little patience for said game to land in one of these series.
