Description

The Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) is a spacecraft  intended to carry a crew of up to four astronauts to destinations beyond-low Earth orbit  (LEO). Currently under development by NASA  for launch on the Space Launch System , Orion will facilitate human exploration of the Moonasteroids , and Mars .

The MPCV was announced by NASA on May 24, 2011. Its design is based on the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle  from the cancelled Constellation program . It has two main modules. The Orion command module is being built by Lockheed Martin  at the Michoud Assembly Facility  in New OrleansLouisiana . The Orion service module , provided by the European Space Agency , is being built by Airbus Defence and Space .

The MPCV's debut unmanned test flight, known as Exploration Flight Test 1  (EFT-1), was launched aboard a Delta IV Heavy  rocket on December 5, 2014 on a flight lasting 4 hours and 24 minutes, landing at its target in the Pacific Ocean at 10:29 Central (delayed from the previous day due to technical problems). The first manned mission is not expected to take place until 2021 at the earliest.

I watched this launch happened during my freshman year at BLHS in Ohio & the launch was postponed due to something going on with a value & a boat in the no go zone & it was a beautiful launch

It was delayed due to someone with a Bass-boat entering the exclusion zone, by the time that has been cleared it was windy, then a valve got stuck

You weren't on site for the launch when they announced these things?

Well considering I live in Oregon no. I do have an admin who lives in Florida, but he was not able to make the launch due to college work.

Looks like you got an excellent picture of the launch.  I eagerly await the day when the Orion capsule is launched with astronauts inside.  I also hope NASA puts people on Mars one day.

It seems that the Space Shuttle was the longest way possible between the Apollo cabin and the Apollo cabin.

Okay what ? Can you reword that please.

Isn't this new Orion essentially a modernized Apollo module?

GeneralTate In reply to Danubium [2014-12-08 19:48:39 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, only with better windows and various upgrades. The main difference is that the Orion can hold 4 astronauts to Apollo's 3.

Look at this the god damn space shuttle was a waste

GeneralTate In reply to thormemeson [2014-12-08 01:58:48 +0000 UTC]

No it wasn't, it was quite the opposite. We did more with the Shuttle Program than all other programs in terms of flexibility and capability. I think we ought to still have a Space Shuttle as well as Orion. Although the SLS Program is a waste in a sense, considering if we had stuck with the Aries Program we would be flying to the moon by now (given the funding) as well as doing LEO missions to the ISS.

I guess so still it seems a bit of a waste all the damn money we poured in keeping it alive.

Well that's what happens when you build things all around the country at multiple facility's then transport all necessary components to one location for final assembly. But the pros of that system is it provides jobs to hundreds of thousands across the country in many communities. Space is an expensive business.
