In an interview with the Game designers, they said that Lyric is supposed to be an extreme embodiment of everything the Sonic franchise has come to stand for surrounding its central conflict of nature versus technology, with Lyric representing the love of technology.
Also, originally he was going to be an Owl, but they later decided that the Snake fit better, especially due to how it relates to the snake of Adam and Eve.

The depth of field effect is really neat here! I like how the cracked glass turned out too.
