Description I've just completed this pic of Michael, but i'm not happy with it. The reference picture is quite dark, and my pencils aren't dark enough to give the proper effect (does anyone have any suggestions) ?

Anyway hope you like it

I don't think that it needs to be any darker, I really like the way it looks now. I think you have a wonderful talent for character likeness and this is proof. Great work!

If you have Photoshop, you could filter it through it there to make it darker... It looks good the way it is though, although I haven't seen the original ref pic...

jonsink [2010-04-17 07:59:56 +0000 UTC]

whats the darkest pencil you have.
If its 7b,8b,9b,you should be able to get really dark by very small circles (scuppling) i think its called mind the spelling though!!!.
Best thing for the dark as well is not to smudge in just leave it.
Hope this helps..

Thank you for the help, i really appreciate it.
I think that maybe it was the technique i was using. I
tend to shade using straight lines which makes my work patchy.
I have just tried your method on a small piece of work
and it came out really well so i will be doing
all my dark shading that way from now on.
Thanks again.

first off..its fantastic...

this happens to me all the time...i cant seem to draw dark enough and i too have all the pencils..sometimes you can add a bit of contrast to your pic if you want...but honestly..i think it looks really good as is...they just keep getting better...

I really really love this one!

Yes, I agree charcoal will work. You can also go with a 6B or 8B pencil and go over it also. Either one will work equally well.

Gemini58 In reply to syah-mj [2010-04-17 00:29:17 +0000 UTC]

Thank you
I actually went through all the Bs i had, from 5b to 9b and
none were dark enough. Maybe it's the paper i'm using, it's
really smooth and pencils tend to smudge really badly on it.
My hands are always black when i've finished, so maybe
it's just me rubbing the pencil off.

syah-mj In reply to Gemini58 [2010-04-17 04:02:21 +0000 UTC]

Maybe I can help.

I don't know if you do this or not, but place a piece of scrap drawing paper over the area your working on and place your hand on the scrap paper instead of placing it directly onto your drawing. If you do this already it could be your paper.

Hope this helps!

i actually think it's a really good version of michael. but if u want to make it darker u should try charcoal maybe? #4 or #6 can be pretty dark
