OMG just watched this amazing movie with my little sister earlier today! The powerful ending led us both in tears, which is rare for me because I hardly ever cry at movies these days. I prefer this version than the Disney version. It's more loyal to the orignal story and Marina is a better character than Ariel (who I still love anyway).
confession time: I secretly kind of ship Marina and Fritz! π

Inorite! It's much more sad and moving, because it's much closer to the source story.
They are both fishes, right? lol

This version is definitely better than Disney's commercialized crap. It bugs me that 99% of people my age worship Disney just because of nostalgic reasons - honestly, the only reason most people think Disney feature films are better than any animation made today is that they watched those films as kids >_<
Andersen's tale is such a moving, beautiful story... And the Japanese actually respected it. Pretty much the only con of the film is the random side plot with the malicious cat.

I've never seen all of Disney's version, but I guess they've changed it from the original to keep it a little more kid friendly? I know I cried my eyes out when she died in this version, and I guess Disney wanted to prevent that from happening to millions of little kids around the globe XD
I'd say this version does beat Disney's version, howver

Yeah, Disney's version's got a happy ending where the mermaid gets her prince in the end and stays human forever yaddayaddayadda... To describe in more detail, the main differences are:
1) Ariel does exchange her voice for the sea witch (Ursula) for legs, but that's the only con she gets for becoming a human: unlike in the fairy tale, her every step doesn't hurt like walking on knives. (Well, to be fair, I don't remember this being included in the anime either.) Also, the original tale said something about cutting the mermaid's tongue off, while Disney of course talks only about losing the voice.
2) The sea witch is the primary antagonist in the film. Kinda boring if you ask me - the way Disney thinks there always has to be a clear villain who wants to take over the throne or something similar.
3) In Ariel and Ursula's contract there was nothing about Ariel dying if the prince had married another girl: the contract was "You've got three days to get a kiss from him and if you don't succeed you'll be a mermaid again".
3) And yes, the film ends happily: after Ursula is defeated, Ariel's father transforms her into a human permanently, without any pain, and Ariel marries Eric, end of story.
So yes, I prefer Marina to Ariel.
