Description Just started using SAI 2 days ago. Last night I created some funny brushes and did some little tests with them.

The above image was done with the default 1.1.0 brush textures called 'wool' and 'dirt' (not sure the exact translation in English version). The wool brush can create paint dabs that look like impressionist oil, and the dirt brush can mimic the dry paint effect.

SAI is much more powerful than I thought.

Is SAI a free program?

No it's not. You need to pay around 60 dollars, almost the same price as ArtRage. But since you can create your very own brushes, SAI actually worths a lot more than 60 dollars.

There's a English site for SAI. They translate SAI into English but you still need a licence

Is it like photoshop in the sense of creating your own brushes or is it better?

Similar but different. They all support editing your own brush tips and textures. The only difference would be that in SAI you don't actually save the brush itself (like creating a brush file), rather you save only the settings. The result is that even if you downloaded someone else's settings, without his library files you still can't use the brush.

In fact PS is more advanced in brush settings (e.g colour variation, scattering etc), but PS brushes usually seem 'unnatural' or 'industrial'. SAI has less options, but its blending result is just superb. So if you are going for something watercolour like manga but not matte painting, I suggest using SAI.
